Right now, I just obtained 252 Warriors of Minas Tirith. For five bucks. Anyway, now I have this massive mob of troops, so what should I build my army as? Some suggested the Knights of Dol Amroth, Boromir, and Gandalf. What should I get to have a nice army?

First thing's first,WoMT than you'll ever need, even in a Warrior-heavy list you'll want 40-odd at most. So I'd hang on to a dozen each of Swords, Spears and Archers, maybe a few more Spears for converting to banners down the line, and sell off the rest to get some funds for expanding. You should be able to make quite a bit selling off the excess warriors.

The first thing you'll want to add is some heroes. Boromir has recently come back in stock from GW and is superb, he makes a great leader for the army. You need one hero per 12 Warriors, so I'd also look at getting some Captains. These are reasonably common on ebay, the only one available from GW is in the Gondor Commanders set, which might be worth getting as it also includes a Knight, banner and hornblower which are all useful. Gandalf is a cool hero to use, but as he's from a different army list, you won't be able to have him lead any Minas Tirith troops.

After you're sorted with a hero per`12 warriors, you'll want to add some variety. The obvious options are some Knights of Dol Amroth or Knight of Minas Tirith for some hard-hitting cavalry, or some Rangers of Gondor for some accurate long-range shooting,,, Both are useful, so you will probably want a box of each at some point, and again, heroes to lead them (GW still sell Faramir, Madril and Damrod to lead Rangers, and the Mounted Boromir or Prince Imrahil make good leader for the Knights).

You'll also want rulebooks. The best place to get the Kingdoms of Men book is direct from GW as they recently reprinted it, but for the core rulebook, check ebay, you should be able to get the mini-rulebook from the starter set for much less than the full-size hardback would cost you. Those are all you need to get playing.

So, in short
- sell off a bunch of warriors
- get some Gondor named heroes or Captains
- expand with some Knights or Rangers

That's all there is to it. LotR is much more about basic troops than it is fancy elite units, so even just using Warriors, Knights and Rangers you can build a solid, balanced force.

Wait wait wait,

Why sell some models and then buy captains when you can convert some of your excess models into captains!!! It is ridiculously easy to do and can be done in many ways. Some people raise them up on scenic bases, others chop up their limbs and repose them, others add greenstuff sashes and cloaks. All work and and look great, not to mention unique and different from other stock captains.

You can convert some more of your warriors to convert into citadel guard at a much lower cost to your wallet!

In 2 seconds I found this blog and he even makes custom musicians and stuff.

The only things you'd have to actually buy; if you want them; would be named characters, knights, rangers, and guardians of the fountain court!

Yup. Got Boromir, as well as some Knights of Minas Tirith. Also converted and sold off a few. I got 5 Commanders leading the force now.
