Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

Finished this little detachment up by pairing DW: Overkill with the new Death Masque releases:

The commanders of the force, Captain Artemis, Librarian Natorian and Chaplain Cassius:

Squad Brimstone, the 'Tactical' unit built for close quarters firefights and combat, and featuring Marines from the Iron Hands, Minotaurs, Black Templars, Dark Angels, Space Wolves and a Blackshield:

Squad Hellfire, the 'Devastator' unit armed for raining death at range, an Ultramarine leading an Imperial Fist, a Howling Griffon, a Flesh Tearer and a Son of Medusa:

And finally Squad Inferno, the 'Assault' team comprised of Vanguard Veterans from the Blood Angels, Raven Guard, Silver Skulls, Brazen Claws, Raptors and Black Dragons Chapters:

And to finish off, a few individual shots of some of the cooler models in the force:

Thanks for looking, any comments/questions/feedback are of course welcome, and any votes in the gallery (all the images are clickable) are greatly appreciated!

Looks great Para. Like I said in your Blog, these Deatwatch models were made for your gritty weathered style. They all have a lot of character to them. I like the Blackshield especially.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Wonderful as always Paradigm. You really should do some tutorials on your weathering techniques - they really are stunning.

Stunning. Love all of them but my favorite has to be the Black Dragon. I'm a fanboy of that chapter and he looks so brutal!

Thanks folks!

@TDL: Yeah, the Dragon is one of my favourites as well, I was really pleased with how mean he ended up looking.

@Gordy: I will definitely be trying to put together various method tutorials soon-ish, I just need to wait until I can get some consistent lighting set up to make sure they're easy to follow.

They look fantastic! With KT Cassius primed black, KT Artemis built and more DW on the way, this kind of post with the amazing paintwork and grittier take on the normal scheme can really help to motivate one

Now if only my bunch of black and silver marines could look anywhere close to that good!

Looking good. My only criticism may is to have chosen a more alien color for all the blood. Maybe some green or purple. Deathwatch fight xenos afterall.

Awesome. I don't know where to start. Each model unique and stunning and it tells a little story!

The Blackshield. Out of curiosity. Is this a horus heresy era backpack? So he is from a traitor Legion?

Thanks guys!

@Anon: Shamefully, I'd not given much thought to the Blackshield's origin, but yeah, that is a HH backpack (it was the only one I had spare that wasn't either standard MkVII or a Jump Pack, so I might just run with that idea!

Very nice, love the gore effects. Really like the gritty style, sets them apart from many of the 'clean' display aesthetics that many painters go for

These are great, I feel like the detail is lost in all the gore. Thats just me though. Other than that, I love these guys, well done.

I would also love to see some tutorials if you get around to it. Can you explain how you did your black though? How did you get it that dull and gritty looking?

The black is 3 main stages. First off, a heavy silver drybrush over the whole model, concentrating on the upwards surfaces to essentially pre-highlight it. Second, that's covered in 'splotches' with various washes to add some colour. I tend to go with brown, purple and green as they're the colours that add pop to the black most, plus a dash of whatever colour the non-black areas will mostly be (in this case the shoulderpad colour). Finally, the whole lot gets washed black. At the end, you have black that is quite deep, muted without being dull and ripe for weathering.

Hope that helps!
