Hey guys
So bit of a hard one here I'm trying to start my legion I have chosen The first legion and I am starting to put together and paint my first bits but was looking for some advice. Having been a long suffering chaos space marine player I would like a list that's competitive enough not to get hammered every game whilst remaining fluffy. I was also hoping not to get any units that are likely to get replaced when the legion specific units or legion specific models come out, so I recon that stops me from getting terminators and contemptors. So far I've picked up the praetors set and the LE praetor that came out at GW, some tacticals and a fire raptor, love the model, but was looking at where to go from here. If it helps the only real competition I have at the moment is my mate who has started SoH and I know he's running reavers, justaerin, rapiers (he says are relentless and will destroy a tank a turn so gives me a guess at his RoW and load out) Spartan and Abbadon as a HQ so would at least like it to be able to take on his army any help would be great.
So far I have come up with the following but not knowing 30k well and as I havent bought most of it yet im happy to change most of it
HQ
Praetor
-Paragon blade
-Digital weapons
-Iron Halo
-Combi Grenade launcher with stasis shells
Troops
Tactical Squad (10 Man) x2
-Additional Chainswords (this seemed fluffy that they would have bolters and swords)
-Vexilla
-Calabanite Warblade
-Artificer Armour
Heavy Support
Heavy Support Squad (5 Man)
-Molecular Acid Shells
-Artificer Armour
-Augury Scanner
Fire Raptor Gunship
-Not sure whether to run the bolters or autocannons
Leviathan Siege Dreadnought
-2x Siege Drills
-Dreadnought Drop Pod
The Leviathan is really just there to get the Spartan but with the rapiers im worried it wont even get close
So what do you guys think and are there any suggestions?
Many Thanks
Cullion

Not a bad looking list what is the point value if you don't mind me asking? I always go autocannons on the raptor, 4 shots of s7 that can shoot at stuff other than the main gun? Epic. It just got a TON better with the update to the hellstrike missiles losing ordinance and being s8ap2. Leviathan is good and should live versus rapiers as they have to kill the pod first and then the dread. Stay inside with shrouded. You will run into mobility issues with your tactical squads, maybe consider rhinos. I play Raven Guard, so I have rhinos and drop pods to choose from depending on the mission, but being able to drive around the board is nice. Also, if the praetor is going to ride with someone it'll need to be a smaller squad. Maybe go for a spartan and throw a command squad or some terminators with him? Or save some $ and points and go land raider phobos as it has an assault ramp over the proteus.
I don't really know the benefits of Dark Angels man, look into some Rites of War and plan around those too. RoW unlock the most powerful combos the legions can bring to bear.
My 2 cents.

I feel like, if you aren't putting TAC squads in Rhinos, they should be at least 15 strong. You get a nice points break on every model over 10 and it gives them the staying power they need to hold objectives and actually be frightening with fury of the legion.

It's around 1200 points but like you said I think I'd need to add a dreadnought drop pod to that. The reason that I haven't added Rhinos is simply that it was my starting point to get me into games and much like doc mentioned I'd be trying to build them up to 15/20 man squads as I go. Though I'd be interested to know if you guys think squads in Rhinos or big squads on foot are more effective overall as general rule as I believe both are fluffy for the DA.

Im gonna suggest you look into using the Ironwing Protocol or Ravenwing Protocol. The Dark Angels of 30k are pretty neat fluff wise, but their rules are pretty lacking and from what I can tell the best way to get your bang for your buck is to use one of those and they both happen to be good and add alot extra to the Army beyond being good in Melee (if they are the same WS as you).

I'm spoiled with my raven guard as I get to infiltrate which mitigates a touch of the lack of mobility of tac marines on foot. I do agree with doom, however, that 15/20 man tacs on foot are very good indeed. Throw on extra combat blades, attach a chaplain and an apothecary and now you have a gigantic blob of fearless and FnP marines to tarpit with. They won't kill much other than tac marines, but they'll drown them in bodies.
Dread pods are awesome, except for being crazy expensive $ wise and points wise. However, with a leviathan they really need it. Definitely go with the phosphex dischargers on it to create area denial once he lands. you do have a 4++ versus shooting as well if you're worried about rapiers lol

Seeing as no one has mentioned it, don't give the leviathan two drills, it's a waste of 5pts instead take one claw and one drill, you still get all your attacks but you get to choose which weapon profile you use, you will want to do this as the drill is much less versatile than the claw.

Yeah I like the point about the claw will make sure I do that. With regards to the Iornwing protocol I had looked at it but as they need to have the tank special rule and be in a squadron the only things that really benefit are predators and you'd want to take the plasma small blast turret(I can't remember what it's called for the life of me atm) or the legion artillery squadron, is the extra ballistic skill worth it for for scattering? I may have missed something but I didn't see Ironwing as being that good, please correct me if I'm wrong as I'd love to give it a try if I could justify the money cost! And I'm not very experience when it comes to 30k
Ps sorry for the late reply work unexpectedly took me away for a few days!
