https://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/introducing-clone-states-and-the-future-of-access-to-eve-online/
CCP Seagull
When we launch later this year there will be two clone states available:
The Alpha Clone State is the new base state for all clones and it will be available to any character in New Eden at any time. Clones in the Alpha state will be able to train and use a specific set of skills including tech one Frigates, Destroyers and Cruisers for your faction along with essential weapons and modules. Alphas will also train skills at a reduced rate compared to Omegas.
The Omega Clone State is obtained by augmenting basic clones using neural expanders and cerebral acceleration technology, granting unlimited skill access. Omega clone state will behave exactly as your subscribed characters do now.
Your clone state will be determined by your account status. Characters on subscribed or PLEXed accounts will be granted Omega state, while Alpha state will be given to characters on any unsubscribed account.
Basically the free trial becomes an unlimited trial with restrictions to which skills and skill levels you can train and a hard cap on SP you can train on an Alpha Clone. Once the cap is reached you can still play the game and accumulate ISK but not accumulate SP.
I really think this is a good direction for Eve and hope they can combine this with an improved new player experience. Eve is probably the most difficult MMO to get into because the tutorials only scratch the surface of what the game has to offer the player.

Are the basic mechanics actually fun these days?
They certainly didn't used to be and as much of the player base are living out a sad little fantasy of being a murderer, EvE is not a game that I have much fondness for.

I played Eve for about 6 months, years and years ago now, and there were things I loved about the game, and things I absolutely hated. The things I hated kept me from going back, but this new system; I think I might check out how things have changed, without obligation. Who knows, maybe its better now.
Plus the intriguing thing about this clone system, is the implicit possibility of other tiers between Alpha and Omega, that could have some potential.

I get your point Puffin. 90% of the game existed in a twisted death race.
I tell you, the most fun I had with that game was getting a corp together, and managing a mining operation of 30 people just stripping an entire system of minerals in one night.
That was a blast for some reason.

Was that mining in highsec space? Highsec mining is the fastest way to death by boredom or a ganker. Mining out in null is surprisingly fun and exciting.
I enjoy the dangers that null brings, watching intel channels for neuts, locations of wormholes, anom rats that give you a run for your money.
I like gang mining, it is really fun working together to achieve a greater goal. Some of our mining OPs break the 100 person mark with the occasional OP reaching around 120 people.
I wish I was better in combat ships, flying in the Alliance Tournament would be loads of fun.

Yeah, in high sec. I could never figure out the combat aspect of E.V.E., so null space was definitely hands off for me. Just way to many a-holes out there. Automatically Appended Next Post: BrotherVord wrote: djones520 wrote:I get your point Puffin. 90% of the game existed in a twisted death race.

I ran two accounts, one would operate an Orca, the other a barge. I enjoyed the coordination aspect of it. Mining solo was boring as sin, but when you had 15+ people doing it, it got entertaining.

Actually you will find more a-holes in highsec than out in null. Firstly as a highsec miner you have to deal with CODE who enjoy ganking miners, haulers and freighters. My corp has a rule for surviving out in null, if you aren't part of the corp, alliance or friendly (blue) you die.
I had zero combat experience when I moved out to null but I joined defense fleets and slowly trained skills for defense fits and have slowly learned how Eve pvp works. I am still not confident enough for roams but I always try to join defense fleets.
Null is relatively empty and there have been days where I have been able to mine for hours (6-10) without having a neut come in system. Which is something to be said coming from the #1 nullsec mining region.
We had a small 25 man mining OP last night and a NPC carrier spawned and the whole fleet had to warp off before the carrier killed anyone, a few re-shipped into carriers to kill the rat and split the nearly 300m bounty. It is never a dull day out in null.

I loved Eve. Spent countless hours in that game. Had 3 accounts pnce. Sold one for in game money to buy capital ships. But I could just never get into pvp. So I quit.
I wish there was a single player game lol. When I get to the end game of MMOs (pvp) I usually get bored and quit.

Eve was one of those things that was really cool with tons of depth to it, but basically felt like a second job and somrthing you needed a 4 year degree in Eve-ology just to comprehend all the mechanics and functionity.
I mean, the sheer number of tools and time one needed to utilize just to move your stuff from one basr to another across different areas could have been a January term course.
Parts of it were fun, but it just required far too much of an investment in time and effort, and I wasnt interested in a 2nd job that didnt pay anything.

Things have changed drastically in the last few years. Many new features have been added to improve the quality of life for players.
There are still parts of the game that are complex and require some research before diving into but that is the draw to Eve.
If I wanted a game so easy and one dimensional that I could smash my face on my keyboard and perform better than majority of the player base I would play WoW, SWTOR or NWO.
I find the time required and complexity of certain aspects of the game make my results more rewarding.

The complex stuff wasnt so much the combat, it was the economy, travel, and all that other stuff. It was literally like living a second life, with all the drudgery life entails to go along with the excitement
I can see the draw for some, but I just couldnt justify the time investment, especially given how even mundane things required lots of preplanning much of the time. I might try it again someday...

Mining changes are starting to creep onto SISI, really interested in how the Rorq will work with the new mining drones.
I am making multiple plans based on the outcome of the boosting changes.
Plan A: convert a mining account to a boosting account
Plan B: go all in and fly a Rorq
Plan C: carrier ratting

Ugh...EvE...my other wife.
Man, I played that game shortly after it launched, a few years after that, and again a few years after that - it's gotten nothing but better in my opinion.
I might re-activate, but I've gotta be honest, running around low-sec doing security missions and ratting can be pretty mind-numbing - I don't know how many times I've fallen asleep because of the music/ambiance and awoken shortly after in a pod.
EvE, how I miss thee.
