Hello fine folks,

After about six years of inactivity I'm returning to the wargaming hobby! Boy have things changed. I have some catching up to do. I've decided to ditch my old Imperial Guard (pardon - Astra Militarum) and go for an army that has always captured my imagination, the Space Wolves.

I threw this list together by leafing through a friend's codex and with very little knowledge of what 40K has turned into, except for assurances that I want to be mobile and capable of holding objectives on the table. I also went through the new model range and put the Wulfen on my 'nah' list, with the flyers closely behind. I realise they are effective choices but I'll never get them painted if I don't like the models

There's currently a bunch of historical minis on my painting table (Saga Anglo-Danes) and some Star Wars: Imperial Assault I'm painting together with my girlfriend (yes, she's that awesome) so it may be a while before I actually build this army. But I do love me some theoryhammer and I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Note that I know next to nothing about these newfangled 'formations', though I heard tell the one that comes with the 'Start Collecting' box is pretty good?

HQ

Battle Leader on Thunderwolf – 140
Battle Leader
Thunderwolf mount
Fangsword
Storm Shield

TROOPS

Blood Claw Squad – 200
10 Blood Claws
Power Fist
Pack Leader with Melta Bombs
Rhino with Dozer Blade

TROOPS

Grey Hunter Squad – 235
10 Grey Hunters with Close Combat Weapons
2 Plasma Guns
Rhino with Dozer Blade

FA

Thunderwolf Cavalry Squad – 165
3 Thunderwolf Cavalry with Storm Shields

HS

Long Fangs – 260
5 Long Fangs
4 Missile Launchers with Flakk Missiles
Razorback with TL Lascannon, Dozer blade and Storm Bolter

I'm basically looking to hit the enemy hard with the Thunderwolves and use the Grey Hunters to rush up and go fight over an objective. The Long Fangs and their Razorback set up in positions to hurt enemy armor and/or fliers. The Blood Claws are there to back up whatever other unit may get in trouble, or to rush in and exploit a weakness.

Wolfs are nice, not nearly as competitive as other space marine chapters but strong enough. Your list is a fun fluffy list which is a good starting point to get some games.

I don't have a lot of experience with wolfs but at these point levels is it better to go for a rune priest and no thunder wolf cavalry. You need more bodies on the table preferably Grey Hunters.

It is also recommended that you get some of your troops on drop pods. These will give you alpha strike and the ability to grab a forward objective.

Regarding your other projects wolfs are sooo nice models so come on! make them happen!

Got milk?

All I can say about painting is that VMC tastes much better than VMA... especially black...

PM me if you are interested in Commission work.

Welcome back Long Fang!!!
Things to look up.
*Champions of Fenris supplement.
*Deathpack from the starter box.
*Warzone Fenris - Sons of Russ.
*Wulfen.
Don't listen to people claiming the Wolves aren't as competitive as other Space Marines, without TWC to form the base of their Deathstar pure vanilla marines are worse than pure wolves.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Thanks for the replies! I like the idea of dropping the TWC at this point level to make room for more Grey Hunters. I also got the advice to reduce the blood claws to six models (inluding a wolf guard) and changing their transport to a razorback. Combining these tips frees up a lot of points - enough to add that squad of grey hunters, provide them both with wolf guard leaders, and upgrade the blood claws to a squad of wolf guard.

It leads to this:

+++ SW no cav 1K (1000pts) +++

++ Space Wolves: Codex (2014) (Combined Arms Detachment) (1000pts) ++

+ HQ (110pts) +

Rune Priest (110pts) [Psyker Mastery Level 2, Rune Stave]
····Runic Armour [Bolt Pistol]

+ Elites (185pts) +

Wolf Guard (185pts)
····Razorback [Twin-linked Assault Cannon]
····4x Wolf Guard [8x Bolt Pistol, Wolf Claw]
····Wolf Guard Pack Leader [Bolt Pistol, Chainsword]

+ Troops (450pts) +

Grey Hunters (225pts) [Rhino]
····9x Grey Hunter [9x Bolt Pistol, 9x Bolter, 2x Plasma Gun]
····Wolf Guard Pack Leader [Bolt Pistol, Combi Plasma]

Grey Hunters (225pts) [Rhino]
····9x Grey Hunter [9x Bolt Pistol, 9x Bolter, 2x Plasma Gun]
····Wolf Guard Pack Leader [Bolt Pistol, Combi Plasma]

+ Heavy Support (255pts) +

Long Fangs (255pts) [4x Long Fang w/ Flakk Missile Launcher]
····Long Fang Ancient [Bolt Pistol, Chainsword]
····Razorback [Dozer Blade, Twin-linked Lascannon]

I would suggest keeping a squad of wolves, grey hunters are good bog standard troops but their not amazing, give the pack leader a power fist and a shield and give the other two guys a bolt pistol and shield each, the shields keep them alive a lot longer than you'd imagine and they can soak up so many shots compared to a standard squad of grey hunters and still get a save against ap2 plasma, my squad saved 11ap2 hits in my last game from one round of shooting, the bolt pistols might not be great but still count as a close combat weapon in assault and allow you to get a few pot shots off

I know you've put the wulfen on you no list and I originally did the same because I also hated the models but eventually caved in and bought some there nice to assemble but a pain to paint but they look increadibl on the table especially if you run them behind a squad of wolves to back each other up

If you were to take the company of the great wolf detachment from the champions of fenris book as your force org rather than a standard cad this allows you to take a HQ and 2 elites rather than 2 troops and also gives your thunder wolf cav +1 ws

Since all your stuff has transports & I think you have all the requirements I'd suggest you look up the Iron Wolves detachment. You'd probably save enough points on the free vehicle upgrades to get the required Wolf Guard Battle Leader.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.
