There was a lot of hype about the release of the genestealer cult when it happened: a lot of tactics discussed, everyone raved about their sculpts...
However, I don't see any talk about them anymore (recently their was some debates in the tyranid's tactics thread to be honest).
Why ? Especially with the Deathwatch and the Kill Team releases, I thought people would speak more about them.

So, what happened ? Aren't they good enough for the players to speak about them ? Too difficult to acquire for the collectors ? The time passed and the Dakkanauts moved on ?

I hope for them to get a nice little codex soon !
What about you ? Do you play them ? Did you fight them ? I'm particulary interested in people disliking them, I'm curious to know why.

A lot of the hype was old school players building armies for 2nd edition and Rogue Trader etc. I don't think many people were planning on running full armies in modern 40K. Just the feeling I got from the various threads/posts.

Outer Space, Apparently

I'd hinge it on people perhaps hoping that GW was taking them further than what was in Overkill, only that they didn't, or at least are biding their time. The bubble may also have been burst by the fact that the Acolyte Sculpts are repeated over just like with the Cultists - pure wasted opportunity on such potentially diverse looking units, combined with the lack of anything else for the army to be taken anywhere past 500 point games.

But don't worry people, you can still buy your Cult Limos 3rd party!

I think more people will play them with Kill Team.
And, if they receive a full proper codex it may have a renewed interest for them.

I'd not be suprised to see them get a codex treatment in the next few months though

Considering Atia or Panda has already said its happening, it will be more surprising should a Codex not come out.

The main problem is that they're not really playable at the moment. You have only one formation, with 0 options, and no battle brothers. As far as I know, it's the only faction like that (all the other small factions have battle brothers).
If you want to include them in a real game, you either field them as CADs (it's possible since the datasheets have battle roles, so you can break the formation and make up to three CADs by taking the exact same units multiple times, only the HQs are unique), or you ally the full formation, but it's really awkward since they're not BB with anything. Both are pretty bad options.

Even in KT it's not great, because they have 0 liberty when it comes to unit composition, they can only pick the specific units that are in the datasheets.

What they need is a codex. And apparently it's coming (maybe not long after chaos if we're lucky).

This would be great if they got a full codex. I would be happy with a partial codex along the lines of others that have gotten such treatment. It could be a great allies supplement if done right.

I very nearly bought DWOK for them when it came out – and probably will at some point in future – but I was trying to avoid adding more to the Pile of Shame. Might be one for the new year.

If there's a full Codex, that'd be cool, but I was already planning on fudging the rules to make something more akin to the old 1st ed. list (by this I basically mean adding in some Brood Brothers and ignoring the fixed unit sizes from the datasheets) – the people I tend to play with are chill enough that this wouldn't prove a problem.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I'm not really one for GW-bashing generally, but if the intention of DWOK was to test the waters re enthusiasm for GSC in 40K, then I think they blundered a bit by not making the army list a bit more flexible, which would have given people more of an opportunity to try it out, and more of a reason to buy multiples of the models. But this is all kind of based on conjecture on my part.

They're really hard to field. They're an exactly 550 point formation, and they're CTA allies with almost everyone...which is freaking stupid. They don't particularly work amazing with tyranids, because the GW faq screwed them over (muh tyranids cant have superfriends, only spoos maroons can have that!!) and they're likely to be a liability with anyone else because of CTA.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Unfortunately, there haven't been any rumors for more Genestealer Cults the way there were before Deathwatch came out. It is a shame too.

The main problem using them as I've experienced is that all the hq options are unique. You need to take the formation for the alpha strike and survivability, but you can't really reinforce it with a cad to bulk up the points.

I am still considering whether or not to start with them. They are so good and fun when you look at them, as a horde army. They are kinda a slugga boy horde players wet dream. 3 attacks base S4, fearless and rending what more would you want.

They are just too hard to come by and I really don't want to sink more money in an army I don't have time to build at the moment.

Like others have said, I'm currently waiting for a codex. Until one turns up we've got a 600pt formation and thats it, unless you want to field an army of nothing but 2 man Genestealer units (which is actually annoyingly effective outside of competitive play) you're kind of boned for any usable choice and thats why mine have yet to hit the table top, even though the models are great.

Na there is more then just the 600 pt formation.

Just consider this list.

1785 points

CAD 1
HQ: unique char1
Troop 6x Favoured disciples

CAD 2
HQ: Unique char 2
Troop 6x Favoured disciples

CAD
HQ: unique char 3
Troop 6x The Favoured disciples

Those Hq's are just tax. But this will give you 3*6*12 =216 fearless objective secured T3 slugga boyz, with always the benefit of furious charge, rending and +2 I
The only thing you would need is some Renegade guard anti Vehicle support and you have a genestealer "ork list" that does a better job at most things if you ask me.
And it would probably look great to. just imagine the mob of purple blueish cultists ready to tear up your marines.

Most people are waiting/ hoping for the proper release. I know that's what I'm doing. If GW hadn't screwed them over allies wise, I'd have bought overkill already. But since they don't really work with my nids I didn't bother in the end.

I'm painting mine, but if i was to actually field them i'd run the formation, infiltrate the whole lot in the enemy's face, and run them with something long ranged to camp the back field.

CTA matters a lot less if they aren't going to be standing nearby...

I have painted and fielded them both as battle brothers to my nidz (before the new rules) and after now that they are allies of convenience. They are a great threat saturation and board control formation. Plus the Faithful throng with the melee HQ make a great mid field objective holder. Ghozar and the Magos both have telepathy ML2 so can fish for invis to make the CC units deadly and the Brothers Aberrant are great vehicle hunters as the unit of 4 is small enough to hide so can get very close to the 12" with infiltrate so after a 6" move can assault pesky back field vehicles and smash them.

Edit: just a note of clarification the formation is 600pts even not 550.

I have just finished finished assembling my GSC models with a view to using to using them in KT. Have absolutely no idea how I am going to play them but very excited about mounting my GSK on the Sector Imperialis bases and playing a game on a terrain rich Sector Imp. board. It has turned into a bit of a project!
