Here is my dilemma, I want to base a new army project using Martian Ironearth. However, since I keep my armies for a long time and can end up working on them a decade later. This presents a problem for me as GW has a tendency to switch their paint line often meaning that in a few years this item may not be available. I made the switch to Vallejo a while ago because of the consistency of the line. I was trying to match of 3ed GW paints and it just wasn't working with all of GW's new lines.

I really like the Martian Ironearth as it's quick and easy and fits with my army theme really well but I don't want to add new stuff in a few years time and find out that Martian Ironearth is no longer available.

If there was an alternative that I could use in the future would make me feel better about using the Martian Ironearth otherwise it might be better to do different basing that can be replicated years later.

Thanks!

Are you looking for the color match or the crackle effect or both?

I would say if you're looking for both, you can get any standard crackle technical paint (I prefer Viva Colour White) and choose Doombull Brown (Citadel, but convertible -- http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart) which will likely apply to the Viva White a little brighter if you thin it, which should give you a very similar effect. But you can use Viva Colour White and apply just about any color on top of it.

Yes I am looking to replicate both the colour and effect. Although there can be a bit of difference in colours and doesn't has to be an exact match.

I was wondering if there was a "generic crackle paint" product out there that I could add colour to get a match.

Thank you for your input

Definitely go for the Viva White. You can easily paint over the textured effect with just about any color. Of course, this would be an extra layer, so for me that would translate into being extra-thin with the layers on top. I've also applied a super-thin primer coat, then the Viva White, then another super-thin primer coat of the color I wish before I start. I've never really tried any other crackle effect paints, but Viva I can say has been tried, true and tested. The results are fantastic.

There are a couple of Crackle Mediums out there, the most obvious one being in Vallejo's line themselves. Similarly, if you want a bit more, you can look up Golden Art Supply, the do a bit more Bulk quantity..
