Paths of Glory looks really fun to me, but I'm a little confused about how to create your warband.

Let's say I want to pick a chaos warband. I opt for Nurgle, and pick the Lord of Plagues as my hero. I get to choose 5 units to go with him. I have five tables to choose from.

Can I choose from any of the tables?

If so, why wouldn't I only choose from the Retinue table? For example, one option from the Retinue table is 2 Chaos Spawn. If I were to choose from the Hero table, the same option (also a roll of a one, if you're rolling) is 1 Chaos Spawn.

Am I limited in the number of single-model units (wizards, heroes, monsters) I can pick (or roll for randomly)?

This is very confusing to me, and I can't see any sort of guidance on what tables to use. I presume I could house rule that when playing with buddies, we should all hold ourselves to a point limit using the info in the Pitched Battles section, but there isn't any info on this.

Have I missed something? Thanks in advance.

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

You can choose from any table, but most people do roll for which table to pick from.

This makes it random, and you cannot get max amounts of Spawn every time by just choosing the Retinue table. In the case specified, it would make sense that the Retinue has more Spawn. Getting a single spawn from the Hero table could be a hero who has displeased the Chaos Gods and have been punished as a result. Getting 2 Spawn from the Retinue table could just be 2 Spawn found in the Chaos wasteland and have been captured to help the warband.

You are not limited in what units you pick, but like mentioned before most people roll for what unit you get as well as the table. This means you could end up with 3 Sorceror Lords, if you rolled that way for example.

Hope that cleared it up a bit!

So you both roll for which table, and then roll for what unit in that table? The chaos tables themselves don't have a number to roll for and there are five of them.

Even with rolling vs. picking yourself (and thus picking the most powerful you can) it seems like you could start out with warbands that don't really match up well with others you're playing against. I didn't see any rules for balancing this out, or just making sure the battles you fight aren't fun for one of the players.

I'm new to Warhammer, so I'm getting used to all this, thanks for your help!
