Field Artillery Batteries as non-compulsory troops choices has me confused.

Doesn't this mean you have to take 2 troops in a CAD before unlocking the field artillery?

I've seen several lists from events like ATC that have Field Artillery as the only troops choice.

Am I reading it wrong?

The part you are missing is that those renegade lists are use The Purge detachment and not a CAD. The Purge detachment doesn't have a compulsory troops requirement (it require elite instead)

It's easy enough to miss but that's not a CAD, he's using "The Purge" detachment from the Vraks book. There aren't any compulsory Troops in that detachment.
