On a Canoptek Spyder's Waiting List

Salisbury, UK

Hiya guys, so I've only just started up 40k and I'm only looking at getting armies at 850 (this'll probably change in the future but for now I shall use what will power I have to avoid spending all my money on them)

So what I currently have it

1x Overlord
1x Unit Immortals
1x Triarch Stalker
1x Unit Warriors (10-12)
1x Unit Scarabs

Was wondering if someone could give me some advice on reliable units as I'm not sure which is and which isn't in the Necron force yet

Many thanks

I said the same thing a couple weeks ago, and yet I keep buying models.

Typically the next buys would be Canoptek Wraiths and Tomb Blades.

Most Necron armies use the Dec Detachment, so from there you would buy a spyder and another set of warriors for the standard Decurion / Canoptek Harvest. Maybe a couple squads of Praet if you want to do the stalker formation. Myself I bought Orikan and some Lychguard as well as some destroyers and I am sticking with CAD. I admit freely this isn't the most powerful, but footslogging immortal skeletons gets boring and I like have a deep strike kill force supported by jump jet infantry. These are decisions you can make for your next purchase, you can not go wrong in any army for necrons by buying Wraiths and Tomb Blades.

Well, i'd go first for the Decurion detachment and then for one or two Canoptek Harvest formation.

I too would build out the Decurion first. For that, you need at least 1 box of Tomb blades and 1 more box of warriors.

From there, buy and play the formation of your choice. The following formations are competitive and popular, without being too expensive.
2 boxes of Praetorians to add with your Staker is a good choice for a strong yet flexible formation.
If you are new, new, then I'd actually avoid the Canoptek Harvest formation. It is strong, but getting the handle on their movement can be a bit much. For that, you will want 6 wraiths and a Spyder.
Buying Oberyon, Orikan, another Overlord, and 2 boxes of Lychguard is also a strong choice if you like to play with Deathstars.
Destroyer Cult is a fun way to play the game, but it is expensive. You need at least 10 destroyers, which come in sets of 1 or 3 for a discount. You'll also need the Destroyer Lord upgrade sprue. The uniformity of the units appeals to me, but the price doesn't.

As above, build a decurion, then aim for a harvest, then a battalion/cult. That builds a very strong army, then just get whatever looks cool for you. I've had tons of fun lately building and painting the IC's, so ive gone and bought all the non competitive ones as they are fun to play around with paint schemes.

But you have a retribution phalanx, so play with that for a while, its a suuuuuper fun list to play with, even with its nerf. Also, get like 100 tomb blades. I have 12 myself, and want more. Behind my D/lord they are my most favourite unit.

Don't go for a Decurion. Everyone and their brothers and sisters and best friends and their best friends' best friends plays a Decurion with Canoptek Harvests and a Destroyer Cults. Sure, it's forgiven, but very unimaginative. At 850-1500 points, I would argue that the Decurion is too rigid a structure to build within anyway because the Auxiliaries are all pretty pricey.

As for next purchases, Warriors, Lychguard with Hyperphase Swords and Dispersion Shields, Wraiths and Night Scythes are all very reliable. Immortals are okay and Praetorians require a certain tactical finesse to play with because they are extremely pricey and not terribly durable with a 3+ SV. Deathmarks are fun, but very high risk high reward and Flayed Ones are often overlooked. With Infiltrate, Deep Strike, Fear, 4 Base Attacks and Shred for the same price as a Warrior, they can be a very effective assault unit.
