So I have played Militia for a while now but when I look for tactics online, they always talk about how Planetary overlord allows you to pick your warlord trait. People have always said to choose warlord traits from the main rulebook, but when I look at the rule it clearly states that you must pick one from the Militia warlord traits. SO is there an faq I am missing? Or am I just being stupid?

Nope. It's a case of crossed wires. The Solar Auxilia one (Lord Marshall) can pick from any warlord trait, but Planetary Overlord is tied to the milita's own table.

This isn't inherently a bad thing, but I'd suggest there are only really two 'good' traits:

Immovable Object (makes your force commander scoring, is good if he's attached to a non-troop unit like Ogryn Brutes or a command cadre).

Merchant Princeling (which is **** devastating when paired with the right unit) which turns a heavy bolter fire support squad or grenade launcher command cadre into marine-slaughters. It also allows you to field a squad with AP4 mortars or frag missiles, which is a nasty shock to solar auxilia.

Yeah, as above, it's only the militia ones.

If you want to use the IM&C table, then take Planetary Overlord as you really don't want to be rolling randomly on that table - it's so situational.

Force Commanders are only really useful for provenances - after that, they're a bit useless, so the IM&C traits are just a way to make them useful for something in-game.

As said above, if you have the right unit, Merchant Princeling is useful. If you have a backfield, non-scoring infantry or artillery unit then Immoveable Object is useful. I quite like the simple +1Ld one, since he can be attached to units a Discipline Master can't go in, like Rapiers...
