Sesame street

Hello!
So I have recently started lurking around here while I paint, and just recently I bought my brothers old models, So I have 70$ to spend ATM. Currently I got 60(maybe more like 57 as some are in pretty bad shape) old tactical marines, 2 devastator squads (magnetized and with a full complement of 5 squishy non heavy weapon dudes in front) a chaplain, captain, chapter master, librarian, 1 rhino, 1 classic rhino chasis that I can put a old metal razorback turret on, 2 of 3 dreadnaughts, this weird guy who has a black latex suit and a skull head + a hand I wouldn't wanna hi five and a cool looking bolter with a needle on the bottom, 1 biker, and a bunch of random terminators. Now seeing as I just started this game thingy a few days ago, and I have some spare money, I thought I would consult you all on what to buy, and If anyone has any general army building advice that would be much appreciated too!

Well what army would you like to start with?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Space marines? I guess I should have added I have the (one right before the newest, but I got the digital newest) codex for space marines, I was told at the LGS SM were the easiest to start with, given the fact that they are relatively babied to stay not bad by gw.

Now you have to decide what space marinesyou want to run, there are so many options, blood angels, dark angels, space wolves, salamanders, etc etc. Find one you like and roll with it. But untill you decide on a legion its hard to give you advice on what to get next.

I got the normal marine codex, I am gonna run them with Iron hands chapter tactics cus I am not tactically adept yet and I figure making them as durable as possible will let me compensate for mistakes, sorry if I was unclear. I am not committed to any background so I am not particularly interested in vehicle heavy with the iron hands background, I will probably think up background once I have my core army. I would much rather have a non background consistent army that I could get good mileage out of (The community seems to be decently competitive, everyone I have met is friendly though so I doubt there are any Win at all costs jackasses) rather than have a background supported but trash army.

In case you were wondering I'm pretty sure the skull guy you are talking aboot is the Eversor assassin

The weird skull guy is probably an assassin. Separate codex, but can be allied.

What chapter are they? One of the stock ones, or a custom chapter?

It sounds like you are all set for basic infantry. You might want to grab some sort of assault/fast attack squad.

In addition to the old fashioned way of putting armies together, the current edition favors formations. Where if you take certain units in particular groups, you get some nice free bonuses. One of the core ones for Space Marines is the battle demi-company.

Captain -or- chaplain
3 tactical squads
1 devastator squad (could be dev cents if you had them)
1 assault squad (lot of substitutions here, like bikes, land speeders, and such)
Optional command squad
Optional dreadnought.

It sounds like you have everything but the assault option. A bike squad is probably the strongest choice, but assault marines with jump packs are classic (if a little under powered these days).

Two rhinos is not really enough. Pretty much every tac squad should be in one. Assuming you don’t go with pods.

If I were you, I’d pick up a razorback kit (don’t glue the top hatch on and you can swap it out for a rhino) and either a box of assault marines or a bike squad. If you can get any sort of discount, you should be able to get under your budget, or at least close.

General army advice:
40k is an objective based game. Keep an eye on the mission goals, and get boots to where they need to be to score.

Make sure you have a tool to deal with the threats out there: Heavy armor, light/med armor, hordes, monsterous creatures, (flyers in some metas),

Make sure everyone in the squad is working together, or those who are can pull the weight of the rest. Things like not mixing heavy bolters and lascannons in the same dev squad; they never want to shoot the same kind of thing. A single melta gun is not worth the whole squad spanging bolters off the side of a tank. A melta, combi-melta, and a multimelta all from the same tac squad can make it worth while though.

Small blasts are generally bad, plasma pistols are over priced, you dice will turn on you, so try to have a back up plan, and have fun.

Welcome to Dakka, and 40k.

Another thing I forgot to ask since I was in iPad and have a hard time typing on it, is what is your play style? Do you a large force or a small elite fighting force? Do you want vehicles? Do you want a shooty or assault army? Maybe a combination of all of them?

This will also help in saying what you should get as well.

I would suggest buying a drop pod or two, hard to go wrong with them. They go for about $38, but you can get them cheaper on ebay or buying them at a store that gives % off.
