Destroyer Cult:
Destroyer Lord - Phase Shield, Phylactery, Voidreaper
4 Destroyers
4 Destroyers
4 Destroyers

Situation:

I recently played a Tau player and lost a total of 6 warriors and 5 wraiths, tabling him. I havent played Tau in a while so I didnt know if this is a list that would be considered difficult, aka I had a really lucky game, or if the list was just fluffy. Because of this, I bring it here to you. His list consisted of 3 Crisis suits with 2 drones a piece, 3 riptides, 1 stormsurge, 1 Tau Commander, some firewarriors and a breacher team. We deployed Dawn of War style, and he went first. The majority of his shooting went towards my Wraiths, of which he was able to inflict 5 wounds total without doubling me out, taking me down to 4 wraiths. The following turn I was able to charge his crisis suits (made the 11 inch charge to be fair), win combat by 3, he failed his leadership, and rolled a 1 for his initiative check, allowing me to sweeping advance him. End turn 1.

He then spent the following round focusing everything he had on my wraiths, however even with the absolutely insane amount of shooting they got on me, between the 3+ invuln and the 4/5+ RA depending on the weapon being shot (received from Canoptek Harvest), he was unable to inflict a single wound. I then did my movement, fired at what I could (killing his HQ and breacher squad), and charged into his 3 riptides which were in a single unit. I ended up winning combat by 1, and again he failed his leadership, and again rolled a 1 for his initiative check. So, my wraiths sweeping advanced his riptides as well. End turn 2.

You can obviously see where this is going, and I recognize that I was making a solid amount of saves while he was rolling terribly referencing his leadership and initiative checks, but seeing that both the Tau units and nearly all necrons are initiative 2, its reasonable to say that the wraiths would have been able to sweeping advance him assuming his leadership had failed.
So the big questions are:

Was his list competitive?
And
Was my list built competitively or did I just get lucky?

Positive feedback, negative feedback, general mocking, etc welcomed.

I'm going to preface this comment by saying I know very little about tau, but I feel that I can probably answer your questions.

First of all, I think his list was decently competitive. Three riptides is definitely competitive, and I think that the stormsurge is also a pretty good choice, and also has access to D weapons. Your list was also competitive. The canoptek harvest destroyer cult combo is very strong. However, you weren't completely cheesed out, because your choices for the reclamation legion (ghost ark/CCB) are not super strong, and you didn'd bring any crazy artifacts or use an orikanstar or anything like that. I think that you got very lucky with your assaults, destroying all his crisis suits and then his riptides in two turns using only your wraiths. This is not at all statistical. Wraiths don't generally do a lot of damage (unless you get lucky with sweeps and rends, as you did in this case), but they are terrific tarpit units and fire magnets. Your opponent made bad tactical decisions by focusing all his fire on the wraiths, and allowing his suits and riptides (all of which have jetpack moves and should be pretty mobile iirc) to get assaulted. He should have probably fed a cheap unit like firewarriors to your wraiths to slow them down while his suits and riptides focused down your destroyers, who probably dealt the most damage (besides the wraiths, but that won't usually be the case). In the end, I think your lists were well balanced, and that your opponent lost because of his bad tactical decisions. I think that even without your good luck he would have lost, it just would have taken longer.
