So I've been ooking up ork tactics so I'm not completely hopeless with them when my army starts growing, and I always see the obligatory "Give your boyz a klawnob with bosspole".
But would is there any point doing this when there are only 12 boyz in a squad (which will be less than 10 models when forced to take a ld check), making it much more likely to roll a 4+ i.e. running away?

Isn't the point to avoid that?

A bosspole is almost always worth getting for a unit, the exceptions are for fearless units (for example gaining the command benefits from the Great Waaagh!-band detachment led by Ghazghkull or a unit with Mad Doc Grotsnik in) or for complete throwaway units (such as 5 Tankbustas in a Trukk).

Every unit you have that is made up entirely of Orks will be using Mob Rule if it fails a Morale or Pinning test and the bosspole let's you reroll the result on that table. For small units this is more important than on large units to a certain extent. A small unit will often only pass Mob Rule on a result of 2 and 3 (if it's not in combat) aka 33% chance of passing, rerolling this noticeably increases your chances to succeed.

Some people hate Mob Rule but I personally find it saves my green behind more often than not, sure you lose some models but that's far superior to running away for the rest of the game or being swept in combat. That's not to say I wouldn't rather have a rule that didn't involve killing my own beloved models but it's certainly better than having to deal with straight up Ld 7.

Yep since you are fishing for the 2-3 result it is worth it to take them. Then when you roll the 1 or 4-6 you can reroll it and hope for the right one.

My Armies:
Orks about 15000-16000 mostly unpainted but slowly being worked on
Militarum Tempestus about 2000 points just built
Inquisition about 2000 points unpainted
Officio Assassinorum 570 unpainted
I dont paint quickly

imo a pole is even more important than a power klaw

Oohhhhhh....
Yeah my bad, for some reason I thought it was a roll of 4-6 that couldn't be rerolled. Didn't make any sense >.<

thanks anyway guys!
