Hey all, I was having a think on what 40k Army I want to start (usually just play 30k) as I have been wanting to get back into the 40th millennium for a while now. I want to start another chaos army but have it with mainly swarms of cultists running around a knights ankles Is this something that is possible or will it be really terrible?

Well its a legal list but its would be quite terrible since cultists are super weak

Admech and a knight or three could work fine. If you're going chaos there is a chaos knight formation as well. Chaos cultists are very weak and little more than cannon fodder, though with some of the recent formations you can get things like squads that respawn. There's also the helbrute formation that lets the brute run in a squad with the cultists and use the cultists for cover saves. Renegades and Heretics in IA13 have some decent armor if you want to roll out some artillery and such. It's all very doable, but if you go the chaos route, it's gonna be a bit harder.

At my desk

Ally your Chaos Knight with a Renegades & Heretics list and make your Arch Demagogue a Master of The Horde. Take Renegade Infantry Platoons with 15 man squads, and Chaos Sigil in each - sprinkle in flamers as you want, you can take up to two per squad.
Now you have a whole bunch of maddened chaos infantry that has a 1/3 chance of coming back onto the board once destroyed (which will happen a lot with such a squishy squad). Fun for everyone!

Renegades & Heretics also gives you access to cheap tanks and artillery to support your Knight(s).

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

Use the new CSM formation that gives you fearless respawningcultists. Or another one that gives you fearlesscultists d6 of which return to life every turn.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Will Cultists at a knights give intervening model cover saves?

If not, then your knight won't last long.

If yes, then you could take a chaos knight rather than a renegade and take the cultists in the respawning formation. Give the knight mark of Nurgle and he gains a 3+ cover save from the intervening cultists. (Of course the cultists won't matter if your up against elevated models, that wraithknight is still going to one shot you)

is an infantry model obscuring an Imperial Knight by 25% because it still is a vehicle

Technically intervening models makes no mension of a distinction between vehicle and none vehicle, only that it is not given if the firing model is elavated. But! I shall yield to your superior knowledge of rule.

All hail CrownAxe!

This actually gives me the idea of running the fallen house detachment with 3 renegade knights and the formation that gives respawning cultists in outflank reserve..A huge swarm of cultists with a few renegade Knights. A large squad of cultists with the MoK throws out a ton of attacks. Smart opponents won't let themselves get charged by 20 MOK cultists... But many people don't realize how many attacks they throw out.. Plus they are cultists- they are suppossed to die!
