Hey All,
I'm in need of some tips and must-haves for a 30k army. I'm just getting back into 30k (I did AL the first time around but eventually sold them off due to not much interest initially. Now the interest is back in force). However, this time I'm looking at doing Word Bearers. I'm looking for what-to-buy suggestions and tips on this legion in particular.
As of right now I've got:
Roughly 30 tacticals
Rhinos
5 Gal Vorbak
10 Jump troops I could use as Ashen Circle
Chaplain
Another random HQ choice
I also have 4 lascannons, multimeltas, and Gravcannons along with 2 Heavy Bolters and a mix mash of different special weapons troops

Buy betrayal at calth. 30 more tacticals, 5 terminators, a contemptor, chaplain, praetor and word bearers transfers

I'll respectfully disagree with the previous poster as you have 30 tacticals and rhinos already. I will say that word bearers in large squads with apothecaries and dark channeling are VERY good. So maybe a 20-man blob with apoc slogging and the a squad in a rhino to reach out and get objectives would be good.
Your gal vorbak NEED a spartan. Bad. If I saw you across the table running gal vorbak on foot they'd be my #1 target.
I'd also say get Lorgar. He's a good force multiplier and can pick and choose his psychic powers. Hello Invisibility!
In 30k you need scoring units, which is why I think the previous poster suggested the BaC box - which is a fantastic way of getting loads of scoring units, so a Betrayal at Calth box wouldn't be a terrible idea at all, I just don't think it'd be the BEST idea right now. Are you playing any games yet? Try out tacticals mounted in rhinos and big squads plodding across the board with apothecaries and see what you like before investing more into them.
Hope this helped a bit.

Buy 40k rhinos so that you can afford more rhinos

Jealous that Horus is Warmaster

Also consider that the new horus heresy "board game" is supposedly very inbound soon and it might have things you would like to take. Personally im hoping for MKIII tacticals that dont have puppy stuff all over them.

Being that the November white Dwarf leak showed lots of MK III painted as TS on the cover, I think you won't have a problem on that front
To OP: I've said it for longer than the 30k board has been around: 30k isn't about bring the best, it's about what fits the fluff you're going for the most (since most every unit in 30k is 'viable') To me, word bearers are a quick, stabby force, so some foot slogging infantry, stabby infantry in vehicles, and jump pack infantry all would fit the bill.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field. |

Lorgar can only select powers from Divination and Telekinesis. No invisibility shenanigans for Lorgar.

Burning Lore can, though - it's a fairly cheap upgrade to your HQ characters, and - even if you don't roll invisibility - Telepathy is a good discipline.
~ Shrouding is good when dug into cover
~ Terrify is superb in a game where fear and morale checks actually matter
~ Psychic Shriek and Domination are lethal against low leadership stuff. Mechanicus players often forget how truly awful the leadership of a Castellax or other Battle-automata is (because it's fearless, so who cares?). One Primaris shriek can do more damage than an entire plasma gun support squad.
Lorgar, on the other hand, has indeed lost access to telepathy in the last update. Fortunately, since he can pick his powers, he's still hella nasty. Precognition takes him from one of the weakest primarchs in a fight to possibly the best, whilst the ability to tag a 20-man tactical squad with prescience, their target with misfortune, and then stand back and laugh as the target takes 40 twin-linked rending shots is just mean.

So I do have some jump packers I was going to convert over to Ashen Circle, but do you think it would be best to leave them as Assault Marines?
Also, I have 5 Gal Vorbak models but I was thinking I could supplant extras with Possessed models to get a 10 man squad if need be. Originally I was going to fit the blob of tacticals with Chaplain and Apothecary in the Spartan, but if you think it'd work better with the GV, I'll try that instead.
I am picking up a spartan on the cheap from a buddy of mine so that will be a solid increase.
What are your thoughts on support/heavy weapon squads for WB?

magnetize the arms so that you can change our your Ashen Circle. With the points reduction, I'm seeing a lot more assault marines now.

Magnets.... *Fist shake*.
I'll see what I can do. I'm terrible with magnetizing for whatever reason.
