I totaled everything in the Eight formation from Damocles Gulf and I got 1339 points.

Can someone confirm?

Anyways, how does one tactically use the massive Single unit that is the Eight. Only one model it seems has target lock and thats the flamer guy. He also has drone controlled.
Does that mean that the turn the Eight arrives it can only shoot 2 targets?

Also how the eff, do you get the eight and a core + aux in 1850. Its impossible.

Its clearly listed exacly how each of them is equipped, you just need to build the appropriate commanders (and riptide/broadside) as written, and you get the point cost.

Do the math yourself, we are not your calculators.

As far as tactics go, given that most of them at ICs, there is no reason why they need to be on the same squad.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Thanks for that load of useless information. Not like I hadn't already sat down and calculated that myself, and was asking for verification from a second source or anything.....

And they enter as one unit, so unit my movement phase, where I get to move them out of coherency, they would be 1 unit for entry. My question is should the drone controller use all the drones?

Be less of a jerk/toolbag when replying please.

Battlescribe clocks the eight at 1494pt.
It lists the cost of each member, including the cost of each upgrade, so it's a good way to check your calculations.
I'm not aware of point cost errors in battlescribe for Tau, but I didn't check that the correct wargear was selected for each member.

Where did you get that they enter as one unit? I checked both Mont'ka and FSE supplement, and didn't see any mention.
Actually, one of them is a riptide and therefore cannot be joined by an IC or join a unit himself (as a MC).
Each one of them has the IC special rule from the formation (the commanders already have it by default), and in Mont'ka it talks about supporting fire between members of the eight, implying that they're different units.

The formation is very very weak. The wargear selection is weird on some of them, and the buff signature systems useless because you won't have anyone to buff. I think it's only intended for fun fluffy games.

interesting, They used to be able to enter as one, unerring depstriking unit in the old FE book. Besides, since theyre all IC, minus the IC MC which I think may have been FAQ'd, so I would declare that they all join into one unit and then deepstrike together suing farsights unerring DS rule.

I looked and they dont have a FE FAQ. Which is totally lame if I wanted to play comp with these guys I couldnt even.

You need to review your rules. since Oblat'tai is a Broadside who lacks the ability to DS since it isn't in a Ret Cadre, your unit would stay in reserve as it lacks the ability to DS.

Ill hit the old FE book and see how they deployed, as for the new book, it doesnt have the ability to DS as one unit. There are lots of issues gameplay wise. It has been killed competitively

I'm not sure it was ever competitive.
The commander chassis is very expensive. It's worth the points when you add a bunch of signature systems, but crisis suits are better when you just want to shoot weapons.
You could build a pseudo eight team, with crisis suits in place of commanders (you could still use a commander with multiple supports though), and field it as a CAD. You would pay way fewer points for the same firepower.

The only thing the eight formation has for it, is the cool factor. If you think it's cool to have all these buffed-up tau heroes, then by all means field the formation. But even if you could DS everyone together, it would be a very very weak army.

Never.
But it's 1500pts for 8 models + 14 drones. Almost all of the army is T4 with 3+ or 4+, very few invulns. The riptide is the only thing difficult to kill, all the rest dies in seconds to Str8 low AP shots.

And the firepower is insanely low. One of the commanders has 2 flamers, two others have plasma + flamer, and farsight has a single plasma. That's 700pts for 3 Str6/AP2, 24" RF + 4 Str5/AP5 shots at 18" (from the two gun drones).

It feels like you really want to make this formation work. But I think it can only be used in a very casual environment.
