I remember back in 5th edition, there was a stipulation for moving vehicles, in that they "move forwards, backwards, or pivot on the spot." However I did a quick review of the movement rules for 7th edition, and while vehicles still pivot on the spot to turn, I didn't see any restrictions for what directions the vehicle can actually move. I always assumed/played it as though the 5th edition rules were in place, but am unsure now:

Suppose I have a Rhino. An enemy takes a Vyper, Piranha, or some other sacrificial chaff unit and Flat-Outs it directly in front of my Rhino, 1" away. I cannot move forward or pivot, without violating the 1" rule. Can my Rhino simply do its movement by sliding to the sideways on its tracks?

I contacted the GW Facebook with a rule-query about it, but they said they're "can't promise by next week, working on something big."

Remember, Pivoting is part of movement, but not actual movement, thus you can pivot through the 1" bubble.

Of course since GW removed the restriction on how vehicles move, your Rhinos now know some maneuvers and can list lazily to the left.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Tokyo drifting Rhinos are best represented by painting racing stripes on them and having fuzzy dice hanging from the rearview mirror or having an icon on the dashboard (mixing 40K and Dogma, maybe a "Buddy Emperor" figure there).

But yes, you can do the pivoting as part of the move, or even just pivoting on the spot and not counting as movement if it only pivots. You have to be able to pivot, though. Or, just take part of the movement as backing up before pivoting.

Or, just ram him. He's asking for it.

What the OP is asking (I think) is something like: If the front of a vehicle is facing "North" on the battlefield, can model be moved "East" without turning, pivoting, etc. while still facing "North" the whole time?

Strictly speaking, there's nothing in the 7th ed rules that says you can't do the electric slide. So Yes. You could slide left, right, diagonally backwards, etc. All without turning or pivoting. As long as your vehicle ended up facing the same direction as it was originally, and only moved its allowed distance.

I suspect this would annoy some players. RAW vs RAI and all that. I wouldn't have a problem with it, but YMMV.

It's how I use my skimmers, so I have no issues with it. If you want a real world example, a tank commander is told to offset by a bit. It (the TC) begins by ordering a ninety degree pivot, movement in the required distance, then another pivot to minimize the risk to its tank. (The front of the tank is a smaller target, and has more armor.)

I just got a response from the Facebook Page

Warhammer 40,000 wrote:Sssshhhh... Machine Sprit?! We have no idea what you mean! *ahem*... Well, now... your message has conjured awesome images of Stig the Space Marine drifting his way round a racetrack in a rhino. Amazing. Now, the way we play it here is that, so long as no part of the model moves longer than the number of inches it is moving, that's totally fine. So yes... yes, it could "Tokyo Drift"!

So I guess The Fast and The Furious Charge is now a thing.

For what it's worth, you're misremembering. There was a statement that they could combine forwards and backwards movement. There was nothing stipulating that those were the only options.
