I realized, to my horror, that I ended up buying three boxes of these guys when the originally went up for pre-order, caught up in the excitement of their implication that the 40k narrative was advancing, and enthused about the prospect of not just taking Thunderwolves all the time.

So how did these guys shake out? At a glance I think they have potential, but I am confused... does Curse of the Wulfen NOT even the unit of Wulfen themselves? As written it talks about effecting other units, and I assume the implication is that the result of their Curse roll doesn't influence other Wulfen units, but the unit does receive the benefit itself right?

Math-hammer tells me I can make a pretty sick unit of five, with a Dual-Claw Champion, two with TH/SS, and two with Axe, for a modest enough sum that I feel like they could fun fun, and fulfill multiple roles, but I would love to hear practical experience.

No, it doesn't affect them. It only affects other units that are not Wulfen. They already get to run and charge, have 5 attacks on the charge, Feel No Pain... What more do you WANT?

I run them all TH/SS personally. Two squads of 5.

I would say 2-3 with th/ss and the rest with either claws or axes. Put the th/sis at the front to tank hits.

2 TH/SS, 1 claw, 2 axes works well enough and you don't even have to take the squad leader upgrade if you need to trim points.

The Curse doesn't affect the Wulfen themselves or the fenris wolves. Strangely enough it does benefit cyberwolves.

As to how to use them I personally walk them and let them play cleanup after my infantry make a mess of their front lines. They draw a LOT of fire because they melt anything in CC. In order to fix that issue I bring lots of fast moving units like Skyclaws and TWC (and for troops footslog some Bloodclaws) to have the Curse help sling shot them quickly into the enemy lines. Forcing the enemy to choose between shooting my Wulfen or the load of fast moving (and possibly now feral) Space Wolves looking to charge down their throat on T1 or 2 helps draw fire away from the Wulfen (also they are the ones you use LoS blocking to help protect against alpha strikes). Once the enemy shooting starts to run out of steam the Wulfen will be able to just mop the floor with anything short of a super psychic deathstar.

At least on paper the Wulfen do seem to have competitive viability. I mean, thanks to Death Frenzy, even stomped-out Wulfen with Thunderhammers are getting to attack an Imperial Knight TWICE, that combat.

I'm tentatively building them, so far, as two 5-man units. One is a Pack Leader, two have TH/SS, and two have Frost Axes. That leaves me with one unassembled box if I want to WYSIWYG something any differently.

I'm also thinking running them alongside a couple mini-Wolfstars might be fun, as the Curse could potentially speed along said TWC, but also provide enough target saturation to frustrate a lot of armies.

Thanks guys. Any other thoughts?
