So I had a friend today claim that, if a Tyranid has both Rending Claws and Bone Swords, 6s to Wound are both Rending and Instant Death. This doesn't seem right to me, and I can't find anything in the Nids codex to support him, but am I just missing something?

Your opponent is wrong. If ever a creature has more than one melee weapon, they have to choose which to use. This means either Rending Claws or the Bone Swords.

This. It is listed under "More Than One Weapon" in the Weapon section of the rulebook.

I am not near my nids dex at the moment, but unless they changed the weapons from the previous dex; then your friend was correct.
In the last dex nid weapons were all listed with the verbiage "a model equipped with x", the FAQ at the time and the new draft FAQs both stated that weapons with that verbiage provide those rules whether the weapon is used or not(it was specific for nids in the old dex, and is a general rules in the draft FAQs)
Yarium and Christoph are, however, correct that you only use 1 weapon for close combat attacks; this is just a(possible) situation of the weapon providing its rules regardless of use.

KK, the wording has changed.
Previously Tyranids benefitted from the special rules of all melee weapons; now they must choose which they use.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

As other properly pointed your opponent must choose wich weapon the Tyranid uses and solve it's attack with it, (but he does gain +1 A )
Be ware Biomorphs effecs are still on effect like toxin sacs, a toxin sac nid + bone sword may wound with poison rule and it's 6 will be ID, or Rending if uses rending claws.

Yep. Previous nid codexes worked like your friend claimed. The current one does not.

Thank you for confirming that the wording did change. Nids aren't played much around here and I don't see many questions about them on the forums so I keep it mostly in storage.
