Hey y'all I already know that vangaurd are better. However I would like to know why... and if there is any time when you should use the rangers over the vangaurd..

Thanks Guys,
Xofox

Well people will say the overwhelming amount of rad gun shots is the first reason. Couple that with their ability to wound twice on 6's and you're dumping tons of wounds on anything, including MCs other S3 weapons normally can't hurt. Next, vanguard are cheaper points wise than rangers. They also synergize well with the somewhat god-tier plasma caliver (I've never liked the thing but I'm obsessed with haywire). Rangers on the other hand are not well suited to carrying the caliver. Furthermore, the -1T in close combat is situational but fun.

Now that said, rangers are good for camping a back objective with their long range weapons. I think the consensus around here is to bring all vanguard, or a mix of both vanguard and rangers, maybe at 75% vanguard and 25% rangers. I like rangers a lot, so I usually run 2 five man squads on top of 20 or so vanguard. It's all up to your personal taste!

Hope that helps.

Rangers can start making shots before Vanguard even make it within range. That's their only real advantage. That creates a distraction for everything else to move forward though.

That's a really good summation. I think it's been shown a lot on this board that Vanguard are, point-for-point more efficient. That being said, I really feel that Rangers are an essential part of any Skitarii force. I've found that 2-1 Vanguard to Rangers works really well for me. I've tried not taking any Rangers, but I really struggled without them. Plus they look really cool on the table! lol

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..."

Ha, I built my starter pack with Rangers, with one armed with the Arquebus, one with a Plasma Caliver and the Alpha with the Phosphor pistol and Taser Goad. But actually at the time I didn't really paid a close attention to army composition so the Caliver and pistol-Alpha were mistakes :p Upon reading more carefully I learned to love the Vanguard as a really good unit, and I intend to run my 1000 pts list with 20 Vanguards and 10 Rangers. I still love the look of the Rangers and I think their excellent range (and AP4) could be quite effective. I intend to use them at the back with the Arquebus to land those precision shots if I have any. As for the Vanguard, I chose the famous plasma squad with the Warlord, with two Calivers in a 10 man unit. I never tested that list though, still waiting for some money to complete it !
