The new Archangels Demi-company has a special rule that you can make reserve rolls for them on turn one. If I stick some of them in storm ravens, does that mean I can start getting my flyers on turn one as well? The "combined reserve units" (brb page 134) rules says I should combine units before the game (attaching ICs and assigning units to transports) then roll for them all together. It would be pretty awesome to start the game this way.
There are already one or two other ways you can do this, such as with the ravenguard detachment in kauyon/angels of death. And Blood Angels already have a white dwarf formation of three tactical squads in storm ravens that can roll to show up on the first turn. Turn one flyers are rare, but not unprecedented.
Where it starts to get extra unclear is when those flyers are in formations/wings of their own. So I'd probably take the formation of 2-4 storm ravens as an auxiliary choice, then bung a load of hammernators and vanguard vets in them.
And finally, you get to reroll reserves if you've got the deep strike rule, but it says nothing about actually using it. Terminators have got the rule, so it seems that I get to reroll the reserves for them whether or not they are actually deep striking.
So let's take a concrete example. Say I take an archangel demi-company comprising a terminator captain, a unit of vanguard, a unit of assault termies and 3 units of sternguard in pods, plus two furiosos. For my auxiliary I take a squadron of two storm ravens. I stick my vanguard with the termie captain in one storm raven and the squad of termies in the other. A furioso hangs under each storm raven.
Then on turn one I think I make a single reserve roll for my formation of two storm ravens, because they are a wing. I get a reroll on this because the terminators (and captain) inside have deep strike.
Meanwhile two of my three drop pods arrives. I can roll straight away for my 3rd one, and I get a reroll because it has deep strike.
Does this all sound correct? It sounds pretty cheesy, and not for casual play, but I'm interested in whether flyer spam could be a viable strategy to counter all the death stars I keep running into at tournaments.
Thanks.
