Can anyone with experience using lichen on their bases tell me what's going on here? There has been a lot of rain lately so maybe they are absorbing the moisture in the air. Is modelling lichen likely to break down and rot? I'd hate to have to re-base my entire army because their bases are covered in rotting plants. Hopefully it just dries out.

It should dry out but it is a natural material so could conceivably decay if kept wet.

Do you mean it's sort of gone soft and gummy? I've noticed that lately on models I was sent. I think lichen may need to be sealed if used long term. It is quite porous by nature, apparently. :(

I'll check mine. Taken off a tree, and coloured with GW washes.

Lichen is VERY receptive to atmospheric moisture and the only way to stop that is to seal it once it's as dry as can be (my suggestion for sealing lichen is to use a thinned down pva mix [mod podge + water + a wee bit of dish soap works best.)

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll try to dry it out and seal it. Would spray on varnish work?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
They seem to be drying out. Clearly atmospheric moisture as Joseph pointed out.

Spray varnish will work just fine (the only thing you need to look out for is the fact that the lichen will soak up the moisture from the varnish so i would do a few practice runs on extra bits of lichen to get the spray amount down pat.)

Lichen evolved to be a condensation trap so this is hardly surprising. I think model railway magazines I read as a kid suggested spray varnish?
