What do you tell friends and family when they ask you what you want? I guess my issue is that most GW models are out of the price range that I'd be comfortable with someone spending. Telling your little sister that you want a $75 Land Raider for your birthday seems a bit excessive. A lot of people tend to want to spend somewhere in the $20 price range. There's always gift certificates that you could put towards something larger, but a lot of people (myself included) would rather give something a little more meaningful. I'm not asking for a list of specific models mind you, just a general idea of how to traverse the inevitable holiday inquisition.

Eh...dice...tape measures...a couple of paints, maybe some brushes (not from GW obviously), etc.

Clampacks! Or little boxes (Scouts, Land Speeders...) and what Elbows said.
Basically, everything cheap enough, or everything I hate spending money on (I really HATE to but a 20€ character. 20€ for ONE model is pretty sad, so I don't buy it if I can).

Maybe a codex (33€, still expensive but at last they are beautiful books and not expensive plastic).

I agree, gift cards seem so in personal but in most cases especially when it comes to our hobby, we never get what we want or need.

So as above said, make a list for brushes, glue or what not, or I hate to say it, gift cards. This way the person giving the gift card will know and be happy that you are actually getting what you wanted or needed.

I guess gift cards it is.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

I choose something that isn't from the gaming hobby. The things I want are way too expensive, the things that are cheap enough to be reasonable gifts tend to be things I've already bought myself. Unless someone is specifically asking for a gaming gift idea I wouldn't bother with trying to think of something.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I have this issue with my In-Laws. My family never really gave big gifts or had big Christmases. We grew up poor. We would get ONE big thing together with my brothers usually and thats mostly it for holidays.

My In-Laws are the opposite. They have money, and gift giving is HUGE in her family. After a few years fighting it and feeling guilty recieveing gifts I said screw it and give her mom an Amazon wish list.

Amazon prices are cheaper, she can order it online, and it has a range of prices from Maelstrom Cards, Paint, Brushes, Bases, and hobby supplies which are cheap, to medium level kits and I always throw in a few big kits on there just in case. (hasnt happened yet, but Im hoping for that Baneblade this year).

Try Amazon then they can pick!

I don’t ask for gaming stuff in general.

But gift cards are always appreciated.

I will typically just ask for a gift certificate from my LGS. My in-laws used to say I was difficult to holiday shop for and in the same breath, say that gift cards are impersonal. I finally had to explain to them that if they wanted me to get what I wanted, that was the best way to go about it, and that I didn't feel it was impersonal at all. I understand that this is a niche hobby and unless they were familiar with the hobby, it is -extremely- difficult to get the 'right' item.

Another thing to do is explain that your hobby is expensive, then say it'd be a good idea for several friends and family to chip in for one bigger thing. That way, no one has to spend more than $20 or so, but everyone contributes, and you get your Land Raider or whatever.

I am actually planning to do exactly that this Christmas. I am going to ask for my whole family to pool my gift budget together and get this https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-US/Thousand-Sons-Task-Force. Even if they each only gift me $50, then I can supply the rest. Everyone wins!

This GW has priced themselves outside the casual gift range. The 8 euro blisters are a thing of the past.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
brushes are perhaps a decent option. You can also buy them in artist /craft stores.
