Hi everyone,

I was wondering how exactly does the Luminagen rule interact with a cover save conferred from Night Fighting (aka stealth)?

I was looking at the wording of the rule and it doesn't appear to say that it would operate like a Searchlight where it gets rid of the cover save completely. Closest possible thing I can see that acts like it would be Banishment where the -1 can't reduce it down to below a 6+. This came up in a game versus a Mechanicus player a couple of weeks ago.

Luminagen: A unit that suffers one or more unsaved Wounds, glancing or penetrating hits caused by a weapon with this special rule counts its cover saves as being 1 point worse than normal until the end of the phase. Furthermore, units can re-roll the dice to determine their charge range against the afflicted unit until the end of the turn.

Stealth: A unit that contains at least one model with this special rule counts its cover save as being 1 better than normal. Note that this means that a model with the Stealth special rule always has a cover save of at least 6+, even if it is in the open.

I would think that it would operate like Banishment, since it doesn't say it negates a cover save, but I don't if this would interact the same and can't really find anything in the BRB about reductions being able to negate a save completely.

It would require a 6+ to be rolled at a -1 Penalty. The highest you can get is a 5 (6-5). So yes, it totally removes the cover save.

Banishment is special BECAUSE it cannot reduce it below a 6+. The fact that it calls that out indicates that other things that reduce saves can reduce it to nothing.

Luminagen isn't a penalty to the dice roll, it's a penalty to the Save. In the case of something with a 6+ Cover save, this is a trivial distinction, but important, since you're not reducing the die-roll by 1, but penalizing the Cover Save to a 7+.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.
