I was bored and felt like theoryhammering a mechanized cult list. I think this has the potential to be harder than it looks:

=Troops=

Mucoloid Spore - 15

Total: 1850

The Magus joins the larger Acolyte unit and preferably rolls on Strategic so he can add shrouded to several units.

The Goliaths are there for Tank Hunting Autocannons that can Infiltrate for better firing positions. The Acolytes will disembark turn 1 and run independently from there, threatening to finish off/eat up small units or go for objectives. The Rockgrinders run on the flanks as an Immolator analogue.

The Flyrants get to benefit from the Cult Insurrection Reserves bonuses RAW, while they can pool their Warp Charges into the Magus. Magus rolls Broodmind, fishing for Summon or any of the buffs.

Alas, for the lack of Meltaguns but sometimes you just have to make do.

Way too soon to give 100% accurate advice but on paper the doting throng seem a poor choice compared to other auxilaries like the subterranean uprising. Acolytes with saws and metatmorphs with claws are the perfect counter to imperial knights and wraithknights respectively which you need to prepare for.

You don't need claws to go after Wraithknights. Versus regular knights, they will be needed. But then they stomp you or explode anyway

This is a fairly conservative list design; I'm not too keen on trying to fish for 6s or otherwise play the "Early Pressure" game when I can start it by shooting up as many small support elements as I can. I remember back when Daemons first came out in 4th edition and people contemplated giant waves of Deep-Striking assault units of doom to overwhelm defenses, but that never particularly took off.

It will be an interesting test, either way.

I think the Doting Throng has its place for the Zealot bubble, alongside a Patriarch you will essentially have two sources of Fearless for your army, even if one of them only works for units in that particular formation. I can see the Cult having Leadership-related issues even if the minimum score in the army is eight (which is the same as Marines!) so you could definitely use the Throng even if only to keep your backfield in place and cycle those units safely in the Cult Insurrection detachment. That, or go full aggression with the Zealot bubble.
