I've decided to start a chaos demon army and I would like some advice on where I should start. I'm mostly interested in nurgle and tzeentch. I bought the nurlge getting started box and I've been painting them, I love these models. My first goal is to put together a 1000 point semi-competitive/competitive list of either mono nurgle or nurgle + tzeentch with a strong psykic phase. Given that, I'm open to suggestions. This army is far different from my space wolves and I'm not what the bread and butter is.
Looking towards the future, how are the formations in the curse of the wulfen book doing? The bonuses seem strong, but the unit choices appear very limiting.

Burning chariots give you(with some bases) exalted flamer, 3 oink horrors, Tzherald om disc, and 3 Screamers. It's the best bang for your buck box in all warhammer. My lgs does 20% off purchases over 100 so I got 4 Burning chariots a box of Pink horrors and Kairos for 197.75.
That gives you:
Kairos
Two squads of 11 horrors(12 from chariots and ten from box)
4 exalted flamers
4 Tzheralds on Discs
8 Screamers
That's about 1300 points worth of army start right there and an excellent core for any Tzeentch start.

For Tzeentch and a strong Psyker phase you want pink horrors.
A Tzeentch Daemon Prince can be quite strong and near impossible to kill with the right wargear and buffs. Lord of Change is great too- with him as HQ that Tzeentch DP becomes heavy support. Also- screamers are very good.

Please tell me that you haven't assemble the Nurglings yet!!!! The instructions for 1 set tell you to make 3 models, but you can easiliy make 6, or 9 if you put in some extra work. you just need to buy more bases. When you assemble them, DO NOT put all 3 "slabs" of Nurglings on each base as instructed You can put the front 2 "slabs" on each base as they will complete each other, then put the rear "slab" on each of the other bases with some of the spare Nurlings in front of them. You will still have about 10 actual Nurglings per base, which is more than enough to represent 4 wounds/attacks per base ------------------ List wise, I personally think Tz & Nurlge are the 2 best alignments, so you are off to a good start. Nurglings + units of 11 Horrors are the best troops, LoC is the best Greater Daemon, Nurlge/Tz Princes are the best DPs due to their survivability. Screamers and Drones are also pretty good. If you get a good mix of those units, you'll do fine -

I did assemble the nurglings as instructed, but I'm okay with that. I like the way they are modeled and I'll be purchasing 1 or two more of the nurgle boxes since they are such a good deal. I'll use the extra nurglings on the plaguebearer sprue to make some extra nurgling bases.
