Can Droppods deviate off the board or do they stop at the edge?

They can go off the board, but the rules don't say what to do if they do.

We always play it as destroyed if it does.

Per RAW, Droppods can indeed drift off table, as "off table" is not classified as either "enemy models" or "impassible terrain".

I always play as if they could drift off table, hence I never drop my pods too close to the edge.

IMO, landing off table does not represent being destroyed on impact, hence the pod would not deviate in order to avoid landing there (as it does in the other circumstances). When the pod lands off table, it has landed safely yet has significantly deviated off course, thereby taking it out of the immediate battle.

Which, technically, would mean that it gives up no VPs.

Take this for what it is worth, but White Dwarf US316, page 86, second paragraph of Drop Pod Deployment Tactics:

"The only way to lose a drop pod as it is deployed is to have it scatter off of the table."
