Subject: Alternative Sternguard models

Hello all!
I am currently building a SM 30K themed army for WH40K.
I just hate the actual Sternguards figs from GW and am looking for alternatives...
My army is build with Sons of Horus in MKIV armour, eventualy it will become mixed traitor legions and will probably, in the end, be used for CSM.
I was thinking of getting an Alpha Legion upgrade pack with combi-meltas for the squad, who will just do great for choosens, but it feels like I'm missing something....
Your help and suggestions would be most welcomed!

Why not use mkii or iii for sternguard? They will be clearly distinct from the mkiv, especially if they all have combi weapons.

I don't even bother with Tactical Marines in my lists. Just give them a different Mk Armor if you need them to be distinguished.

Sternguard are just powered armor marines with a little extra bling and a fancy paintjob. They can be a simple as tactical marines that took an extra trip to the bitx box. Or if you are using FW parts, find the things that look coolest to you and stock up. Alternate armor marks is probably a good call there.

USe the BAC marines, as they hav a bit of bling on their legs. Use the shoulder pads from the sternguard kit. FW makes some pre-heresy style bolters that look like deathwatch bolers = perfect for sternguard. They also sell preheresy combi weapons.
BAC + sternguard kit + FW bolters = win

I used the FW recon marines as my Sternguard as they are Ravenguards. They look pretty cool.

Well I'm already using the basic legion recon (not the RG one) for my scouts...
Next thing I might get would be legion outrider for bike squad; they look amazing!

Have you got an overall look for your army then, sounds pretty cool I must say. I nearly went with recon squads for scouts myself because the models are so cool. In the end I just used them as Sternguard and gave them combi weapons. I still haven't plumped for the Mor Deythan models yet though.
I think your best bet would probably be to stick your Sternguard in Mk2 or Mk3 armour, give them characterful heads and poses, and sprinkle a few crux terminatus in here and there for added bling. It may be worth your while picking up the base armour you want from FW and then buying the Sternguard box for the weapons and bits options and selling on the bits you don't want on eBay.

12 combi-meltas and 3 combi-gravs are on their way... The overall look will be an army slowly transitionning to Chaos; the idea is to play in the post heresy area, during the retreat to the eye of terror. The corruption of chaos wouldn't take hold to much so no mutation... yet... The many ship transporting the traitor marines back from the battle of terra would include a mix of different legions, but mostly Sons of Horus.
