Hey folks. I'm going to be basing my KDK in a mars like base with the Martian Ironearth and I was curious since I've never used it. Do I need to attach rocks etc first then paint them, then lay down the ironearth? Also, should I do the base to completion before attaching the model and if so then what should I attach the model with?

I really really like the way the technical paint cracks and all that, but I'm curious how I should apply it as I've never done it before.

Thanks!

i paint everything decorating the base first, and then put down the Ironearth last...
you can just glue your bits on first, put down the Ironearth, and then paint the bits after...

one trick i have learned, is to paint your base in a red-brown first, and paint the Ironearth over that, or else the black plastic of the base will show through the cracks a bit too much...

have fun, i really like that paint

cheers

thanks for the replies guys! I have a couple more questions.

Where can I get little pieces of rock to use on the bases. I've seen people with little buckets of the slate or whatever it is they use, but in my areas the only naturally sourced stuff is sand lol.

Also, with the Khorne Daemonkin painted red and black and bone colored like The Wrath scheme, would the bases look better with the Martian Ironearth or with Agrellen earth? One is red, the other is tan(ish) desert color. Just looking or opinions and also if you have seen or have access to any of these pictures let me know.

Thanks!

Playground sand can work as small rocks, and I've used pebbles from my driveway as larger ones.

Dirt sieved can be used to get all sorts of rocks for your bases. http://iwillnevergrowup.com/2013/03/22/tutorial-basing-miniatures/

Woodland Scenics has a $10 Rock making kit, which comes with talus, a small white rock. Only get the kit if you're also interested in casting rocks, though.

Cork is used as rock. :

Spoiler:

Base is from Secret Weapon Miniatures, and I also used Realistic Water.

I've talked to a couple people locally about the khorne army and basing, it seems that the mass majority of them said I should go with Agrellan Earth as my base needed to contrast with the model since they are mostly red and the red from the martian iron earth would be too much. I'm thinking this is a good idea.

thoughts guys?

You actually don't need distess paint to get that crackle effect.

PVA glue shrinks as it dries. If you put a thin layer of any acrylic paint over top of it once it starts to dry it will cause the acrylic to crack and pull apart because it is adhering to the now shrinking PVA.

Pro-tip, paint your base a dark brown first, then PVA, then lighter brown on top. As the PVA causes the top layer to crack and the PVA drys clear you will see the darker color through it.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I'd swerve red bases if your guys are already predominantly red; I'd suggest going for something with a bit more contrast.
