I'm trying to paint my Imperial knight to appear as if he's never been active for ten thousand years. Is there an easy way to paint dust and chipping paint manually?

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...
koooaei- Emperor: I envy your nipplehorns. <Magnus goes red. Permanently>
Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

In the hangar of a Mechanicum ship. It was environmentally sealed.

Well assuming that we're using some future paint I'd say in an environmentally sealed hangar the worst that would happen would be some pealing. Maybe some discoloration.

But if it was environmentally sealed I think it'd last quite well.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

I'm looking to old decaying cars for answers and what I'm seeing is a lot of fading and rusting towards the edges of the vehicle so I might try to imitate that look.

Bear in mind from a lore perspective, the traitor legions etc havent necessarily experienced the full 10,000yrs.......the warp does werid things to time after all

That said, it might well do the extreme opposite

It's a Loyalist Knight unironically named Only in Death, hence my desire to make it look as old and beat up as possible.

That sounds fantastic! If you pull it off it will look amazing. I think I might have done the same google searches as you when I read the thread, and looking at pictures of old cars, a knight that looked like that would be quite the thing.

Imagine a knight painted up to look like this:

Keeper of the Holy Orb of Antioch

avoiding the lorax on Crion

That could work. Discoloured in places, bare metal showing through.

Though given 40k id go lighter on the rust.

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

10,000 years of active service...they'd have painted it a hundred times or more. Honestly at 10,000 years almost every part of that Knight would have been replaced/retrofitted/upgraded or restored.

That being said I'd go with a lot of rust and crud.

10000 years of inactivity actually. The Knight is as it was coming out of the Forge, bar the corrosion and damage.

If it was in a hanger and environmentally sealed, it'd look pristine. You need to be looking at old cars that have been sitting in an airtight box in a cave. The cars you see with fading and chipping have been in the sun and elements.

Honestly, if it was environmentally sealed as you stated, it would probably look nearly factory new. That truck above for reference was likely sitting outside in the sun and elements for many years. On the other hand, a brand new paint job doesn't exactly convey the 10,000 year old machine you are probably going for.

Help me, Rhonda. HA!

Ah, okay. I had read "had been active for 10,000" not the other way around. In that case...covered in feet of dust.
