And speaking as a Computer Animation major, the animation looks like it suffers from something of a mis-management of time, which is pretty much because this is/started as a 'for fun' project- There's a lot more care and probably time that goes into the fight scenes, to make them look just as awesome as the creators imagined- but the 'boring' character bits inbetween? Can't be bothered to spend the extra time to do things like make the fingers move or tweak the weight shifts to look more natural. Plus, I think they're animating everything with Forward Kinematic rigs, which, while perfect for aerial Anime fights, run into some trouble with making realistic walking.

But they're learning as they go, pretty clearly, and I imagine it'll just continue to get better. Remember ReBoot, and how janky it was when it first started up? Then you compare that to the third season's animation? They may even start releasing longer episodes or do a movie if they get comfortable enough with it.

And if you want examples of 'getting better'- well, just look at how they were first using some of the traditional Anime tropes and movements- when the group's first getting together in the dorm room, and Ruby is bouncing all over the place looking at stuff, they're just cutting straight from one still frame to another- something that's done all the time in 2d Anime to show someone being 'hyper' or inquisitive. But in 3D, it just looks like junky, janky, lazy animation. Skip to season 2, when Ruby is doing the same sort of thing following the White Fang members through the abandoned city, and they've learned to put a little ease-in and ease-out on the movement, as well as a couple frames of motion bluréd Ruby moving between the positions. It looks a lot more natural and easier to comprehend.
