Ma warmest welcome!

Firstly, let me say that community on this forum convinced me to start WH40k. My wallet says hello to you all.
But to be serious, thanks. I indeed hesitate for like 3 years and I thought it’s a bit silly to play with toys (for such amount of money) but as soon as I started painting them my doubts went to hell.

Once again need your help. I'm the only one person to collect WH40k in my social circle. As my friends are people that more or less are interested in tabletops but don’t own wh40k I thought that’s good idea is to create two armies for start just to have something to play with someone. I picked up Dark Vengeance (6th ed with Chaplain Seraphicus cause I just liked that mini and wanted to paint it). Rulebook went to trash, I scored other one on ebay. Then I bought some tac squads for CSM and SM, in the meantime I scored some other second hand minis for pre painting purposes. After some time I knew that this money wasn’t well spend but I got all those cool minis to paint and learn so no hard feelings.

And that’s where I’m now – firstly I haven’t read the rules or codexes. Reason to this is very simple, me and my friends want to learn “on the fly” using those small guides from DV set, then move to the more advanced rulebook and codexes. I think that learning all together can help us set this as a hobby and nobody will be left out. Plus it’s always better to learn together and a nice way to spend some spare time than just gathering around and explaining rules to everyone for the first two hours.

So right now I’m painting all the minis from DV and from time to time I’m collecting other ones. As I’m getting to finish (only cultist left and I feel that it will be a bit pain to paint as still I have some issues with flesh tones). I’ve read as much as I could and I’ve digged through *a lot* tutorials on yt but never touched actual game. Just in case if it turns out dull and boring I’ll still have a flame to paint them (which actually gives me a lot fun and helps me to be more patient person, hope the game will too).

Moving to actual question – At the moment I’m limited to CSM an SM and for now I intend to keep it that way. I always liked both sections and still I’m considering which chapter of SM/CSM use as Dark Angels aren’t my cup of tea, same as Ultramarines or Blood Angels. For CSM I’d like to move to thousand sons for that awesome look (and awaiting rumors for new minis). In the future I’d like to start collecting another army to play but for now let’s leave it as it is.

What help I need is…what minis to buy next – please bear in mind that I haven’t read the codexes for very specific reasons so I don’t have the full overview. Hence I’m thinking about another army to counterpart SM in future as I’ve read that CSM are more or less weaker version of SM.
So here’s the question – what next after DV and two sets (one for each faction) of SM Tactical Squad + one stormtalon ?
How to build my CSM force to match the SM force for a nice, somewhat balanced fun play with friends ? Just to learn, have some fun and epic friends moments 
I was thinking about Space Marines Strike Force Ultima + maybe some of the new formations from Traitors Hate ? Or buying CSM Terminators Lord’s cadre + two sets of Raptor/Warp Talons and move the Land Rider from Strike Force Ultima to CSM. Probably some helldrakes ?

Overall I would like to ask for a small favor in helping to start and have a bit fun at the beginning. Sorry if the post is too long and in wrong part of the forum!

Gone-to-ground in the craters of Coventry

Hi there,

Welcome to Dakka.

I cannot help with the models (I don't play Chaos), but look in the Players Finder at the top of Dakka, or the Local Clubs forum, for opponents or local advice.
Contents aside, the starter sets are usually very good value, for the prices they go for. Price up what is in there, and see what you can save buy buying the sets.

There are 2 options.

If you intend to play games with your armies then.
Stop buying stuff mini's and stop reading this forum until you have read the a SM and CSM codex.

If you don't care about the game and just want to paint stuff, then buy whatever you want.

Inactive, user. New profile might pop up in a while
