Had this on my radar since the trailer, but have yet to see it. Love the actors, never seen the original. Anyone who's seen the remake care to weigh in? Currently it has a middling score of 54% on Metacritic.

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

I loved it, the most fun I've had with a film since Star Wars. The plot is pretty by-the-numbers, but this is a story that's been told a hundred different times so that's to be expected. The characters and actors are all on point (Denzel is fantastic, as is Pratt), the action sequences are superb (and pretty brutal for a 12 Certificate, not overly graphic but it doesn't shy away from being being shot down or blown up by the handful), the cinematography and music complement it wonderfully and it really does feel like a brilliant update of the classic Western formula.
It's great fun, fast-paced and has a good balance of action, humour and character beats... If you've seen the fantastic True Grit remake from a few years back, it's every bit as good as that.

I'm quite the stickler about movies, but I couldn't complain at all besides the very seldom nitpick

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...

Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

Saw it. I am not a huge western fan, but it was a decent movie, genre be damned. It suffers from ZOMG, so many people ensemble cast syndrome. Some chemistry was good, some meh, and some could have been explored more ( Indian and former scalp trader).
My favorite character was not Star Lord or Malcom X, but Edgar Suit from Men in Black. Not nough screen time.

Saw it. Enjoyed it quite a bit.
It's a good movie. It's nothing that will make you feel like your life has been changed, but it was enjoyable.
You could tell that Antoine Fuqua(the director of "Training Day") had a respect for the original, as he tried to keep the pacing/beats very similar without going too far afield.

I saw it. It was a fun movie, not great, but not bad. It's worth a matinee at least.

I've seen the original. Still, even that was a western remake.
Really no intention to see yet another remake, though. Regardless of how "faithful" it is to the previous one.

Wife and I saw it through over the weekend. Its not nearly as good as its predecessors (M7, Seven Samurai). However, I actually liked Pratt much more in this movie than GoftG. The rest of the ensemble is generally good and the villain is good. Denzel does well and Ethan Hawk plays a decently good tortured soul part.
Its not a deep thinking movie, but as does well under the old style "Summer Fun" category. Lots of bang bang bang and bad guys getting wacked.
I would recommend it if you just want some fun.
One thing:

-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG
-"Don't mind Frazzled. He's just Dakka's crazy old dude locked in the attic. He's harmless. Mostly."
