Have an upcoming game and am hoping to make it as fair and fun as possible, its between a close friend and a 1350 point game between CSM and Necrons both of us are taking huge mechanical monstrosities. Im taking 3 soul grinders and he is taking a tesseract vault. But Im not sure how many soul grinders I should commit to fighting the vault in order to make it as fair as possible. I'm currently thinking of taking 2 with warp gaze and 1 with phlem bombardment but am I underestimating the vault? Will it blow me to peices in a matter of a few turns? Or is 2 warp gazes too much? The rest of my army consists of cultists, noise marines (blastmasters) and a sorcerer rolling on heretech. (The more I think about it the more fun this match sounds). Not sure what infantry he will be bringing but I imagine it would include some warriors and immortals.

Don't want to powergame just want a fair match where none of us get blown to pieces on the first few turns. (Although considering what Im up against it may be easier said than done!) What is everyones thoughts?

The vault is incredibly based on dice rolls my friend. He has to pick a target, then roll for a power, and it could mean hitting a squad of cultists with a D strength attack, or an apoc template. It has many hull points and can regen them, and a long range, but it has to draw line of sight from the C'tan in the center. The vault is 550 points, so he probably wont be bringing much more in a low point game like this. Not sure how efficient you are at stripping AV14 hull points with what you have, dont know CSM well. But you might not be able to kill it and it will wreck face, or you might not be able to kill it and it will completely whiff every turn until the game is over.

Warp gaze for my soul grinders is str 10 ap 1, phlem bombardment is a str 8 ap 3 blast for infantry. Atm my list has 2 warp gaze soul grinders and 1 phlem bombardment (soul grinders are AV 13 walkers aswell so they pretty strong) 3 soul grinders are around 550 points but not sure if I should swap out the last phlem bombardment for a 3rd warpgaze. I also have 2 str 8 ap 3 ignore cover blasts from my noise marines. But the blasts are hopefully going to be used on the infantry, need that instadeath for those necrons.

Don't take warp gaze. It sucks on a bs3 model. You havew S10 ap2 CC attacks if you need to hurt a vehicle then just punch it

But with the formation I have if a model takes a wound I can re-roll to hit, with a str 8 ap3 large blast I should be able to take out some warriors surely. But you are right I should definatly run after that thing

The Vault has more hitting power than a regular C'Tan but it costs too much over an Obelisk for me to ever take it, plus we have no confirmation on the firing arc of the Spheres.

However, you can't exactly ignore it as a Daemon player, and destroying it will blow it up no matter what. What's the rest of the Necron list look like?

You could take 3 individual maulers and DS them close to the Tesseract then run at it. They won't do much, but it's enough of a threat that it will take 3-4 turns of shooting to get rid of 3 individual ones. That leaves you with 500 more points and 3-4 turns, you should be able to work the rest of the army over in that time. Cultist tax also work for this, as do daemon allied troops.

Lose warp gaze. 2 with torrent and sword and Slaanesh to run forward, one with phlegm and nurgle to sit in ruins and drop Azmodan dunks.

Unfortunatly I don't have mauler fiends, and I agree that maybe I should just get rid of the warpgaze after all. But I disagree about the torrent, I think you undervalue the instant death and garrenteed removal of their armour. Removing as much of their reanimation as possible is a must if Im going to even so much as contend with necrons.

Torrent is AP4, warriors are +4. How often to people run immortals these days?

Torrent is sweet because you place it how you want. Slaanesh with torrent is the Go-To assault soul grinder. If you want to punch the tesseract, you will be running up to it as fast as you can. Slaanesh gives it further distance on that.

Though sword is very expensive for 1 more attack.

Enjoy scatter with BS3. It's nice when it hits, but stinks when it doesnt.

Suggest have something cheaper to charge the Vault, like Maulerfiends, when the Tesseract Vault is destroyed, it is always a Titanic Explosion that might take your units too close with it.

Don't forget your sorceror. You're quite likely to roll a power with haywire on heretech so be sure he can use them. So yea, roll up with the sorc and punch them with the grinders. If you get boon of the iron beast they could even still fire on the run, well, one of them anyway.
