There was a discussion about Cypher going on in P&M a few days ago, so I thought I'd post up my Cypher. This is the old GW official model. Most people aren't keen on the miniature, but I like it. It was certainly fun to paint. What do you guys reckon? Terrible miniature? Terrible paintjob?

He's metal, so he feels weirdly heavy to pick up now I'm used to plastic miniatures.

Very good paintjob on one of the best 40k miniatures GW has ever made.
In fact it is the only 40k model I still have on display. Sold 99% of the remaining stuff. So yeah, I do like this model a lot! Can't understand why people didn't like it.

Yeah, same here. People seem to want a more brooding Cypher mini, and as cool as that might be, I still think this version of him is pretty great. The sword is just a brilliant thing in it's own right. Thanks for the compliment regarding the paintjob. I'm never sure whether anything I paint is any good or not, but I was pleased with how the hood came out. His cloak in general looks like it needs a wash.

Yeah, the classic dirty/dark look.
Well done.
Did you use the technical paint or manage that crackle finish somehow else?

On the base? That's Agrellan Earth with a few washes over it. I love that stuff. I didn't use any technical paints on the miniature itself, but I did use Vallejo's Smokey Ink, which is such an amazing, versatile paint that it seems like cheating. It's a dirty brown colour with a slightly gritty finish. Thin it down and wash it over your metallics and they look really nicely old and weathered. Use it on leather and it gives an aged but still slightly gloss look. It looks effective painted on vehicles as a grimey line running down from any bolts and things that would have had oil on them. I used it on the cloak as well as the leather pouches. Then there was a lot of messing about trying to get a sort of sackcloth textured look on the hood.

That freehand skeleton is very tidy.

I'd love to take credit for some freehand, but that's part of the model. It's moulded on. I can't do freehand, apart from the occasional shirt number on a Blood Bowl player.

I love the Cypher mini, he's always been a favourite of mine, I love his fluff too, mysterious wanderer is he loyal, is he traitor? What's that fellow up to?

Great paintjob too.
