Hi I've recently started my imperial guard army ( Savlar chem dogs) and am wondering about allies as I realise there not the most competitive army out there. So far I have planed the following.
1 x comand squad ( 4 flamers + chimera )
3xvet squads ( chimeras , bolt guns on sargents and either 3 meltas or 3 plasma guns in each squad currently 2 with plasma 1 with melta)
2 bane wolfs
1 rough rider squad with a melta gun.
Comes in at a smiggen over 1000pts
My local area is based around 1850 points and is riptide, wraithknight and imperial knight heavy.
Any suggestions would be appreciated .

A really economical and effective option is ravenwing grav bikers and land speeders. Guard are generally bad at long ranged anti tank, dealing with wraithknight/riptide equivalents and mobile objective scoring, and these guys help to patch all three! There is a ravenwing formation called the 'ravenwing attack squadron' which lets you field a unit of bikers and a land speeder that come on from outflank. I bought some dark vengeance bikers and converted some grav guns and they just rock up half way through the game and smoke the hardest target in the enemy backfield. They're very points efficient as you don't have to pay for HQ tax. They're also pretty durable as they have re-rollable jink saves, which means even the speeders can be tricky to take out without ignores cover. Really can't emphasise how much this has helped with my guardsmen

You can take the Inquisition. Cheap Psykers, with good weapon & armour options and the ability to place the Deep Strike-blocking Servo Skulls is always welcome.
Also Assassins. Culexus is currently the best OA agent, but a Vindicare is perfect for eliminating high value targets on the map, with his special ammo.

I second both of those suggestions too - I've used both on occasion.
Culexus is a great counter to the psychic shenanigans that a lot of races are packing.
Inquisition are good counterparts to either a foot guard list or mech guard. Their chimeras are better (5 fire points), and if you take 3 special weapons in a squad with a psyker they are quite destructive.

Also if you don't mind Heresy... Genestealer cults are allies of convenience with guard. Also you can use 90% of the units you have as GSC. Add a few boxes of hybrids or buy theDeathwatch overkill boardgame and you will have a decent GSC force.

Knight Commander Pask in a Punisher Leman Russ backed up by another Leman Russ of your choosing (I like the Eradicator or Exterminator myself) is a fantastic option for a warlord HQ choice. Seriously it's ridiculous how much damage Pask can kick out in a Punisher.
It's pricey, coming in at over 300 points for the pair of tanks, but I've quite literally picked up a riptide in one shooting phase with Pask and his escort tank (It's unlikely to do this, with feel no pain rolls and all, granted) but my opponent got a poor second jump roll and had his riptide exposed. Twenty rending Punisher shots with Preferred Enemy, a Lascannon, and a pair of heavy bolters reduced the riptide to one wound, and my Exterminator Leman Russ chipped the last wound away thankfully. My opponent was not amused.
Other suggestions are also good here, but give Pask + Punisher Leman Russ a try.
Take it easy.

I second that. Pasknisher is always good, just remember that it is a high value target. Protect it with cover and smart movement. Also the Punisher Gattling Cannon is only 24'', so you'll need to get close to use it effectively. It's not always a good idea, especially with armies that have a lot of bikes or jump troops.
