For those of you uninitiated in the Irish language, the title means "greetings from Galway," Galway being a city and county in the West of Ireland, where I call home.
So I've been a member of Dakka for a while now, but I've never gotten round to formally introducing myself; until now that is. So here goes.
I've been a fan of the 40k universe since my early teens, though I'm quite a ways off my teens these days. I've always loved the background lore and artwork that surrounds the hobby, and I've often found myself poring over the stunning photos of beautifully painted miniatures in the various magazines, rule books and other such publications wherever I can find them. Over the years, I've made various vain attempts to break into the hobby, but never with much success. My endeavors usually started with an aspirational purchase of some starter box or another, but I never quite got past the sticky glue fingers and oddly posed infantry man stage, and the contents would inevitably find their way into the attic, with their other, badly glued, misshapen brethren. I suppose it didn't help that none of my friends ever expressed an interest in the hobby. Don't get me wrong, they were just as geeky as I was, it's just that the late 90s also happened to usher in the Golden Age of Video Games (and for a fraction of the initial investment), so they all just had other priorities. But thats really just a poor excuse. The truth is, I just don't have any artistic ability, and maybe I never will, but I've never stopped loving the stories and images that fired my imagination all those years ago, and even now, I still find myself regularly perusing the hallowed halls of the Dakka Gallery, finding equal parts awe and nostalgia at the incredible talent on display there.
Only recently, I managed to dig out my latest impulse purchase (Dark Vengeance - though I think the rulebook I have is out of date). Anyway, I made more progress this time round than I ever have before, and though the paint job is horrendous, I'm still pretty chuffed with it. Already though, I'm finding my motivation flagging, and I think the reason is that I'm beginning to doubt that my globulous green little Dark Angels will ever see the tabletop of battle, and let's face it, being unfit as they are for the display case, the table top is where they belong. The problem of not having any companions to share in the glory of the miniature battlefield is still one which haunts me to this day it seems, and it's not one that I'm likely to resolve as far as I can tell. So far, my best attempt to remedy the situation, has been to visit my Friendly Local Gaming Store, which does indeed sell Games Workshop merchandise, and I'm certain they do have a budding gaming community (though I've not seen it myself), but they all seem a lot more focused on Magic: the Gathering and the like, and on those occasions when I have hung about for a while, they all appear strangely aloof, which I suppose is understandable. I mean we geeks probably tend to be a shy bunch to begin with, but even accounting for that, who in all honesty ever felt comfortable asking the strange 30 year old man, loitering awkwardly on the periphery, if he wanted to come play with your toy soldiers?
Anyway, somehow this intro seems to have deteriorated into some sort of man vs inner child cry for help, which wasn't my intention, honest.
So ah, yeah.
Hi?
