I've just finished my Space Marine army, looking to expand towards something different (not-MEQ). I'm looking for an army that's fun to model and easy to paint, what do people recommend?

Daemons are a great modeling opportunity

GSC is new and very different from Space marines. They are also filled with fun opportunities to convert models.

Orks, Dark Eldar, Tyranids: Cool, diverse model range. Drastically different styles than MEQ. Sadly, their competitive build options are very limited and you may end up stuck with a monobuild if you want to compete.

Eldar, Tau, Daemons: Highly competitive, very different in style from SM except for their largely shooting/psychic focus. Drawback is primarily the model range, which depending on how you feel about the aesthetics can be pretty weak for each army. In particular Daemons have a hard time being both competitive and well themed - you can do a decent mono-tzeentch but IMO the four ranges look like crap side-by-side, and for truly competitive armies you will want some undivided-ness.

Genestealers, Admech, Harlequins: Pros are a very new range, very unique playstyle, and few "trap" units that are just garbagio, which you can run into with other armies. Cons are that all the armies are highly limited and tend to be expensive monetarily, unless you lean heavily on ebay'd Death Masque/DWO/Skiitari Start Collecting set.

I've been thinking about an AM list themed around the Normandy invasion, using DUCKWs as chimeras, Warlord minis as soldiers, and Shermans as Leman Russes
