I've finally decided to start off with the Guard, (though Tyranids are still really awesome). Yet, as it seems with 40k, there is so much lore, and different regiments, each seeming to play differently. My favorite, background wise, would be between Cadians, Steel Legion, and Kreig. So I was wondering, what exactly would be the best one to start off with (my first army, ever!). I like the way the IG has lots of troops with heavy mechanized support from tanks and artillery, and just keep hammering away at the enemy.

"Enemies of the Imperium, hear me. You have come here to die. The Immortal Emperor is with us and we are invincible. His soldiers will strike you down. His war machines will crush you under their treads. His mighty guns will bring the very sky crashing down upon you. You cannot win. The Emperor has given us His greatest weapon to wield. So make yourselves ready. We are the First Kronus Regiment, and today is our Victory Day. " - Governor-Militant Lukas Alexander, Commander 1st Kronus Regiment |

If they're your very first army, I think I'd go with Cadians. Steel Legion and Death Korps of Krieg models are fantastic, but they're harder to find, more expensive, and generally require more skill to paint and model. You can build a force using a Star Collecting! box, a couple boxes of infantry, a command squad, and a Wyvern, and you'll have the start of a pretty quintessential Guard army.

I fully agree, but just to toss a wrench in the works...Genestealer Cult can use AM equipment, and ally with Guard...and Nids...possibly way to get both?

If you already own Tyranids, as others have said I would recommend Cadians. You'll save yourself a fortune and they are probably the best regiment to use for a genestealer cult if you ever decide to start one someday. Cadia often finds itself in conflicts all over the universe, whereas regiments like Steel Legion are rarely seen outside the Armageddon systems due to the conflicts there. Many planetary defense forces not from Cadia also use Cadia styled equipment, so from a narrative perspective I think Cadia would be your best choice.

Interesting, though I thought the imeprium hated Genestealers, especially the Sisters Sororitas. I also do not have the Tyranids, yet.
Thank-you all for your advice, I figure with the unanimous agreement on Cadia, I will go with them.

The Imperium does, because they're filthy subversive xenos that taint the human form and lead the gullible away from the Emperor; the alliance is to represent the Guardsmen actually being filthy subversive xeno-spawn

I guess you can always look got a used IG army. Theyre faily underpowered right now outside of certain specific builds ( even they aint great) so many are selling their army.
Got a huge IG army for 250$ CAN. Mostly all decently well painted also.
