I'm looking through the Ork Codex, and I see the rules for regular Meks:

"Mekaniaks: For each HQ choice in a Detachment (not including other Meks), you may include a single Mek chosen from this datasheet... Before battle, immediately after determining Warlord Traits, any Mek that is not already part of another unit must, if possible, be assigned to any unit with the Infantry or Artillery type in their detachment."

Can I assign a Mek to an Independent Character, as it's technically its own unit? The rules simply state you cannot assign a Mek to another Mek, but there's no written restriction on assigning them to other HQ choices. If the answer is "yes", could they serve as henchmen while my Independent Character joins/leaves units, similar to Wolves/Cyberwolves in Space Wolves?

Suppose I took Mogrok's Bossboyz as a formation. "Formations are a special type of Detachment." This formation has four HQs. Can I take 4 Meks?

Ugh. This can of worms.
Q1. Technically the Meks can be assigned to an IC unit. However, the rules break down from there. For example, can the IC leave the unit? Can the IC join another unit? There is no official answer on these.
Q2. This is much easier to deal with. Formations can only consist of the units specified in the Datasheet. As such, if the Formation does not allow 1+ Mek to be taken, you cannot take any Meks.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Q1 is not as bad as happyjew made it seem. As to whether the IC can join and leave units with an attacjed Mek; the answer is a hard "No". Wolves and Drones have specific allowances in their rules that let that happen, Meks do not.

So, yes a Mek can be assigned to the IC; but then the IC loses the ability to join and leave units.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.
