Visited a GW store. A group of players stood around a table building their armies, trying to work out the conversion rate from GBP to USP.
Great British Points to US Points. Had out the cell phones, were using Google to convert the points as if it was currency. One of them asked if he can play in German, because he heard the conversion rate is better.
The guy running the store was demonstrating AOS to a family. He was in no rush to clear up the situation.
I thought this was just people not understanding the rules, but I was wrong. The Ork player was handicapping his army to offset a power deficiency using international exchange rates.
Is this actually a thing now?

Yep. Better start learning some new languages. For example, if you can play in Japanese you'll get about 100:1 points, and you can get up to 500:1 or more if you want to learn some more obscure languages. But god help you if you're part of the bitcoin crowd, you'll be lucky if you can get a single unit on the table.

Wow dang! I didn't realize there was a variation in unit point value with differing language editions.

Points are not, but names are. I used to enjoy going around in the local GW shop and checking out the names of models in other languages (when I could decipher them).
While this is from 10 years ago, the Eldar Dire Avengers, for instance, were listed as "Hunters of Asuryen" in German I believe.
