Firstly: I am not sure which forum this goes into so MODS, feel free to move it as it contains my own opinions

So I am creating my Ultramarines force for 40K and am trying to write some fluff for it. As it is dominated by MK.4 armored legionnaires, I was thinking about a detachment of the Ultramarines that went missing in the Warp during the Horus Heresy. It was rumored at the peak of the HH, the ultramarines had about 250,000 soldiers in their ranks. To represent such massive ranks, they had to have massive company sizes. Here is where my opinions come into play. I was thinking about how Captain Darius (made up) and the 404th (hope you caught that one!) are alerted by Nathaniel Garro and the Eisenstein about the impending attack on Terra, break off of the main force that is fighting on Calth at the time, and are trapped in the warp. Note that this is all made up and never did happen as the sons of Guilliman were too busy shooting the Word Bearers as Calth goes supernova. The point is, Darius walks off his ship and fights xenos with MK.4 marines. Anybody have suggestions as to how I can change this?

There's no reason why a small force of Ultras wouldn't be dispatched to Terra, but they couldn't be warned by Garro as the novel, which is canon (and which is practically the only attention given to the Death Guard Legion at all in the main novel series), doesn't show these events.

If the loyalist Death Guard had reached Ultramar it's likely they would either have been detained there as suspected traitors or detained to help defend Ultramar, considering the Ultras thought their Primarch was dead and their planets were being nuked. And Ultramar is at the opposite side of the galaxy to Terra so the Eisenstein would have been seriously off course.

You'd have to consider that Ultras would not want to leave their region because it was heavily under attack with a realistic chance of losing.

Also, the Ruinstorm appears around this time which cuts Ultramar off from the rest of the galaxy.

You'd be far better off having one Ultramarine expedition ship getting attacked by a warp leviathan or somehow thrown off course in the warp. They'd probably be ignorant of the Heresy until they arrive back in realspace and make contact with the nearest forces (loyalist or otherwise).

You could even have them make contact with traitors and the traitors try to convince them that the bad guys are really the good guys.

Upcoming work for 2022:
* Calgar's Barmy Pandemic Special
* Battle Sisters story (untitled)
* T'au story: Full Metal Fury
* 20K: On Eagles' Wings
* 20K: Gods and Daemons

Pretty much what NoPoet said.

It's probably better to have your Ultras away from the Word Bearer invasion, cut off by the warp storms, or even lost in the warp at the time. There's no need to have them sent off for a Heresy related reason - they were just leaving and got caught in the warpstorm.
