Okay, this came up and has caused a huge debate in my local meta.

How much wargear can a character have?

For example, can a character with a pair of lighting claws, take a pistol to shoot in the shooting phase?

Or I have seen some codex's where they can just take gear.

Is there a rule anywhere that limits what a character can take.

I am under the assumption that if you take a pair of weapons like LC, you give up your ability to take other weapons.

They are arguing that you can..

Someone help please? I

The draft faq added stipulation that a character may only have one relic unless stated otherwise.
As far a regular wargear is concerned there is no limit that I know I of. There are limits, but those are borne from a requirement to replace existing wargear for new wargear.

From a rules perspective all models are basically this:
Spoiler:

A csm lord for example, needs to replace both their bolt pistol and their ccw to get two claws. They don't have the option to simply buy more weapons, but if they did, you could put rambo to shame.

Wel it states a character can replace its pistol and close combat weapon for a pair of lightning claws. And I was always under the assumption that lc are now occupying your hands not allowing you to use anything else.

And since you dropped the pistol for a claw you don't have anything to trade. Outside of named special characters (cypher) for example you can't have two pistols and a sword.

That's what I meant by a requirement to replace. That is meant to simulate not running around with an arsenal. But there is no formal limitation on wargear or weapons. It's just that you can't actually acquire that many weapons. Least not as far I know.

I dunno. Just seems cheesy as hell to shoot a pistol while armed with two giant power claws for hands.

Well, weapons can be holstered, powerfists are removable. Perhaps the gun is attached to the fist or shoulder or tentacle.
Grips can be modified, etc. The rules are for all weapons after all. It might seem weird with claws, but the character could be wielding two combat knives, hardly seems unreasonable to shoot a gun in that scenario. Not to mention if that character happens to have more than two arms.

Pretty much this is the standard to operate under.

A model starts off with a certain amount of Wargear. They are given options to either gain new Wargear or replace certain pieces of Wargear with other pieces of Wargear. So long as you adhere to the requirements of those gains or replacements, you are good.

For example, a Chaos Marine Aspiring Champion starts out with a Boltgun and Bolt Pistol and a Close Combat Weapon. This Aspiring Champion has access to the Melee Weapons and Ranged Weapons list. These lists allow for the exchange of Pistol or Close Combat Weapon for a Melee Weapon or one of its Weapons for a fancy Bolter or a Plasma Pistol. Any of these can be swapped out so you have a very interesting (and expensive for one Wound) model with an exotic loadout such as a Combi-Bolter with Lightning Claw and Power Fist.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

There are plenty of models with three (or more) weapons. If it bothers you from a fluff perspective then have the pistol mounted on one of power claws (plenty of examples of close combat weapons that have built in shooting weapons)
