Ok, so I'll be picking up a BaC kit soon, and I'm to get a Typhon because it's a big siege gun. And I really have no idea where to go from there. As I know none of the 30k rules. Halp Plz!

Start by getting the two red books as they have the rules you need. Pay attention to the rights of war as they offer good bonuses, but dictate how you build your list to a degree.

You can't go wrong with tyrants and havocs though

Play loyalists, take a nice big havoc squad with that loyalist special character to let them reroll ones to hit in their deployment zone.

Kill all the vehicles.

Or you can be a filthy traitor, I suppose...

The Iron Warriors does not have the best Legion rules but they have two of the best Rites of War. Both of them benefit taking tanks and artillery, so I suggest that you could continue builiding your army with Vindicators, Basilisk and Morters.

The three special units (Iron circle, Iron havocs and Tyrant siege terminators) are all very good too. So you can´t mistake buying it.

For the named characters, two of them are loyalist IW and the other is Golg, that is exactly equipped as the Praetor in Betrayal at Calth Box. So paint it as Golg, is the perfect proxie and there is no official miniature yet.

Anyway you will need a Warsmith and a Siege Breaker, the most flussy options for this legion and very usefull. Both of them are a very good command character to follow Golg in your bitter crusade.

A certain Dark Angels friend has swayed me in favour of the Emperor(sticking to IW though), any Loyalist specific advice?

Iron warriors have some of the strongest legion rules and they go great with our legion specific units. If Loyalist always take Kyr Vhalen as you warlord if you can and take him in a unit of ten tyrants with a siege breaker and either a primus medicae or a master of signals.

Kyr valen and Dreygur are both loyalist IW characters, take a look on their profiles.

If you wanted to be fluffy, you could get a Shadowsword. Perturabo used to have one called Tormentor.
