I'm currently trying to pack all of my models into safe portable containers. I already have nice storage for half of my tanks and all of my regular SM infantry. What I'm struggling with is the Ravenwing Bikes.

I plan to make the foam cut outs myself, this isn't a prebought solution. What tips do you have for playing the jig-saw game of trying to get the most models to fit in the least space?

I'd also appreciate any advice you can give on choosing a container to put all my models in. I'm thinking here in terms of going to a hardware store or similar and buying a large empty crate. What should I look for?

A good way to save space is arranging the models so that the bottoms of the bases of two models are touching.
It might only save you a row per tray of foam but it adds up in the end.

Everyone: No.

Head to Bunnings Warehouse or Supercheap Auto. They sell hard plastic cases in a variety of sizes with uncut foam trays inside. They'll have a stock photo of camera equipment, electronics or maybe firearms on the outside. They range from $50 - $150 but that's in New Zealand, Australia will be cheaper I'm sure and anyway they're worth it. They are completely air and water tight, long term exposure to dust and light will no longer be an issue at all.

Take your time planning out how to maximise the amount of models you can fit. The foam trays come semi-precut so you can easily standardise your cuts. Speaking of cutting, I bought a Stanley knife from the same store and a set of 10 blades. It takes a bit of time to work your way through individually cutting out each recess but the advantage is it will be completely customised to the needs of your army.

I have 2 of the larger cases, one holds around 200 infantry, the other has a dozen tanks and a super-heavy. Transport, storage and preserving my expensive models is pretty much effortless now. While I'm not currently living in the same country as my 40k models I know that they'll be exactly the same as I left them whenever I return.
