Hello All,

I have preordered Burning of Prosperos (friend of mine is getting the Sisters and Custodians) so I'll have 30 tac marines and 5 terminators for starters. Granted they're MK3 but I have no intention in using them for 30k, but I digress.

I am going over chapter tactics over and over and I simply cannot decide which route to go. It's worth mentioning that I love tactical marines and plan on using most if not all the ones I'm getting. So transports for them seem fairly obvious. But what chapter utilizes them most effectively? I'm not hoping to be a power gamer since my meta is fairly casual but I also hope to do the tac marines some justice. Perhaps I'm just over thinking it? Maybe tac marines are the type of unit that fit well in any marine army no matter the chapter.

If you were me, where would you go from here and why?

Do what you love and love what you do. Like sell firewood.

I like White Scars. Hit And Run is just that damn useful.

Honestly, though, if you're casual, go with your favorite paint scheme.

create your own Marines, they have rules for creating your own Chapter, that way you can paint them how you like, me i'm working on my Kraken Guard Chapter which is my own design with a preferred enemy even (Tyranids).

Thinks Palladium books screwed the pooch on the Robotech project.

Scars are go to for bikes or Rhino-back spam.

Anyone else would probably benefit from Ultras (for the army wide re-rolls). And they have enough successsors that at least one of their color schemes would appeal.

Quick question about successor chapters: would Mark Three Power Armour actually make sense for them fluff wise?

Eh, I dunno. You can make anything work fluff-wise, as far as I'm concerned.

Imperial Fists get my vote. Lovely to look at, buffs the bolter on all your tacticals to be more reliable. Great lore and they get IT DONE. https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Imperial_Fists

Yeah, there are rules for using your own chapters... With using the existing rules. Not your own rules.

I don't mean rules like that but they allow you to pick plus and minus things which essentially is your choice of rules for your chapter. like preferred enemy is one which gives a bonus when facing your enemy but a negative against others.

There is nothing like that in the SM codex.

I heard there were things like that in the older editions, but there are no up to date rules for that in the current 40k game at all. You can always make your own and use them if your friends are cool with it though.

yeah wasn't sure if it was in the newer editions or not since don't have the new stuff, but think it would be grandfathered in since it did not off balance the game the way they did it, they just gave you a choice of certain high bads and low bads and high goods and low goods and they had to balance out and such.

One from the First or Second Founding would make the most sense. There are at least 7 unnamed Ultramarine successors you could create if none of the existing ones catches your eye.

For a force composed of mostly tactical marines, Imp. Fists or Ultras would probably be my suggestion. You can either paint them as is, or as a successor, named or do-it-yourself.

Depends a lot on what you like to paint, and the other forces you plan on adding.

On the topic of the mix & match rules, that was way back in 4th edition. Not something I would encourage a new player to look into. It would be fine if you played with a like-minded oldhammer group, but there were some crazy things you could do with them. Although I’m not sure if the level of shenanigans we can do with modern formations is at the same level. Might be worth looking into for laughs.

If you're going with Fists, Sternguard are pretty valuable - I think they get the re-rolls with special issue ammunition?

Certainly that's the case for the detachment rules in Angels of Death (although losing Battle Company: Company Support is definitely a casual-games only move).

Definitely paint your own color scheme, that way you can change it up so you never get bored of the same thing!

On another note, my Blood Ravens often use Red Hunters chapter tactics (it's a Forgeworld Chapter, link included below); it's extremely versatile and you can change what they are "good at attacking" during the game to help you out of tricky situations.

You are thinking the fourth edition marine book, and no, it was not grand fathered in.

You could always be an Ultramarines successor and use tyrannical war veterans from their datasheets they released a while back. Cheaper Sternguard who don't get combi weapons and only get hellfire rounds.

that was my intention since it Was Marneus Calgar who requested for the new chapter from the UM gene seed to fight Hive Fleet Kraken.

If you want to try more than one Chapter Tactic rule, paint your marines in your own scheme. Then you can just say they are successors of whatever chapter you want CTs from.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

If you want to paint an established chapter, paint one of the unknown foundings from GW and Forge World.

Paint them however you want then probably go either Imperial Fists or Ultras if you like tacticals.

Yeh, sounds like 4th ed. I liked that system. had a lot of neat stuff you don't see too much of anymore.
