Subject: New Miniatures Game in Open Beta: The Drowned Earth

Hey guys!
For the last year of my life I have been burning the midnight oil designing an alternate Sci-Fi tabletop miniatures game set in a world of my own creation, the continent of Ulaya, a land of tropical rainforest, ancient ruins and terrifying predators! After a terrible cataclysm nature has retaken the earth- ancient cities stand silent in the wilderness, but slowly, quietly, civilisation is beginning to return. The only question? Who will control it?
The Drowned Earth is an alternate activation skirmish game, approx 5-15 models per side, which features a unique dynamic movement system and reaction mechanic allowing highly cinematic and narrative gameplay, and almost no downtime.
Miniatures are in development, and we are preparing for an April Kickstarter. However, we are committed to making the rules as awesome as possible, and so wish to have the game sampled and critiqued by as wide an audience as possible first by releasing it 6 months ahead of time in the form of an Open Beta test.
And so I proudly present to you:
We have just launched a free PDF "Open Beta" edition of the game and are very eager to have people download and provide feedback on the rules and gameplay.
We are also looking for more dedicated playtesters to check out some of the newer things we have planned.

The style looks like a French comic, will there be a technological advanced faction (like the brotherhood of steel in the Fallout series.

At the date of the Kickstarter release there will be 4 factions in total, one of which uses more technology than the others. However, the faction concept in TDE is a little different- rather than being racial or political they are more aligned with professions:
Artefacters = Treasure hunters, archaeologists, adventurers.
The Firm = Gangsters/Organised criminals.
The Militia = Town defence forces of independent settlements.
The Bondsmen = Bounty Hunters and Slavecatchers.
All the factions have a mix of the different races in The Drowned Earth, which are in most places quite integrated and live in mixed communities more than half the time.
However, in the background story there are a number of 'factions' in the proper political sense. These are not currently represented in the game, but one of them might just be as you describe- far more advanced technologically, for whatever reason.
But they're also a big secret, so no more about that just yet .

Nothing against your chosen theme, but after seeing that incredibly atmospheric and I Am Legend/Last of Us-like painting in the OP I was a bit disappointed when I scrolled down and was met with anthropomorphic animal and goofy Street Fighter dudes Still, nice art.

Lol. Thanks for the feedback! Taste is such a relative thing that I guess it's hard to do something everyone loves.
We definitely wanted a bit of "goofy" and cartoon aesthetic in there. The game is fairly post-apocalyptic in nature, although I think "post-post-apocalyptic" is probably more accurate as there's a lot of re-building and re-discovering going on.
But that can be very "grim", and I feel like there are already quite a lot of "grim-serious" stuff out there. We're big fans of the pulpy, high adventure genre and the game definitely reflects that, or at least we hope so.
From a personal point of view though, I could commission art from the title artist all day and never get bored. His stuff is SO evocative. But I come from the generation where RPG and wargame rulebooks had an eclectic mix of different styles. I know that's not everyone's bag, but I think ultimately the "vision" of the world should come from your own mind when you read and look at the flavour material, not be imposed upon you by a "house style".
Anyway, like I say, thanks for the feedback- really tough to know how people will take what you do till you actually push it out there, and without feedback and guidance it's hard to know which way to go! .

Completely respect your choices here; the title piece just set some expectations the other art (though high quality) didn't meet! Best of luck with your game though, looking forward to seeing more minis.
