So in the Burning of Prospero thread in N&R, the rules for Custodes in the Horus Heresy were posted.
What are everyone's thoughts on these?
Personally, I think they're pretty sweet, especially the sentinel guard squad with their 2+/4++ paired with power swords with rending and BS2 Snap Shots.

They are troop TEQ's with WS/BS/w 5 and 2 wounds. That's prety damn great.
It's strange their Vexilla dose not have rules, I guess it will be a command squad item or something. That bit from that kit will be perfect for converting a Loyalist Herald tho! Alot on the topic of legion consuls, Tartaros Armour is the best option for alot of the legion consoles, and now having plastic tartaros armour to convert these characters from will be a huge deal.
You can get alot of millage out of this set!

I'm a fan of what we have seen so far of the Custodes and eagerly await the rest of what they have. I think the two 5 Man Squads I will be getting from my boxes will be made to represent both of the two squad types.
I think in an allied detachment I'll use the Sentinels as the HQ choice.

My only 2 real complaints are:
1) I don't like power lance rules, but I can live with it
2) I don't like 9-man maximum squads. Why! Why not 5 or 10!?!
Beyond that, love 'em. Tough, but nothing that screams broken

These are just place holder rules until we get HH Book VII: Inferno, but so far, they look pretty good. I can see using these guys in 30K. The Sisters of Silence though? Well, that's a different topic.
The Vexicila will probably be a standard that allows them to reroll leadership tests or something. These guys are not fearless (but are immune to fear...LOL), so moral checks will be a factor for them.
The nine model squad thing is probably an oversight for now. I bet they will get ten model squads, or they will be able to take a series of Independent Characters to attach to a squad for ten models. Or maybe they will get the rumored "Grav Rhino" that can only transport 10 models...
It's very surprising that the Custodies will be a full up 30K army and not just a "splash" release of one or two units. So far, they have Troops, Elites, and presumed Heavy Support with that previewed grav tank. Add an HQ option or two, and a transport and they will be a formidable force in 30K.

Indeed it is surprising, and I am more than happy to have them as an army. I already feel the pain of my wallet.

well, there's 10,000 of them, and feature pretty prominently in any battle that the Emperor took part in I would be supprised if they DIDN'T get a full list. Sisters are the only one I wonder about being a full army or not.

Sisters will probably get lumped in to the "Talons of the Emperor" list referenced in the White Dwarf. Sisters, Custodes, and other fun toys.
As far as the Custodes themselves, I'm having difficulty picking between the spears and swords. I know they're two different units, but as of now you pick either squad to fill an HQ slot. I need to math out the offensive output of the two, because the shields are undeniably more durable and I have an inkling they'll be more damage when receiving a charge (certainly so against 2+ save opponents).
The issue right now comes with actually getting the unit up the board. They lack Deep Strike or any Dedicated Transport options. The long slog will be painful for them, though T5 2W 2+/5++ (or 4++) certainly helps. Demolisher Cannons and the like will be scary, though Sodality helps with that. The question comes down to whether Legion dedicated CC units with a transport outperform Custodes without.

Sure, they lack dedicated transport options, but what is stopping you from taking a non-dedicated transport for them? An Anvilius Pattern Drop Pod, Spartan Land Raider, or Storm Eagle seems perfect for transporting these guys. Transporting them in 30K seems like a non-issue. It becomes an issue in 40K, but again, there are non-dedicated transport options available that will take up a force organization slot that could interfere with detachments and formations.
Unless I'm missing something?

I recall a rule (which may be specific to 40k, unsure) wherein you cannot begin the game embarked upon a vehicle outside of your detachment even if allied with Battle Brothers. It's what squashed Skitarii pod lists in 40k. If this isn't a factor in 30k, then all is well and Custodes just became a lot more fieldable.
Also, I ran some numbers comparing the two units at min squad size. Shields > Spears when receiving the charge (Spears kill ~1 more T4 3+ save model, but half as many 2+ save models). Spears > Shields on the charge by a margin of ~2 T4 3+ save models killed, and an enormous margin on 2+ save models. So I think I favor shields as an all-rounder, with Spears being a clear-cut winner for charging Terminators.

So they won't be an elite choice for a Loyalist Legion, or anything?
If so, then they can't start the game in an ally's transport. They can hop in after, but that's it.

It's in the recent FAQ drafts that GW posted. HH still follows 7th edition rules.

No they are an Allied Detatchment in their current state, but when HH7 comes out and they are their own list, I'm sure they will have a DT so it will be a non-issue.

Thanks for that, I am now picturing Imperial Fists sitting around then getting super excited when a ship flies over only to sit back down in disappointment as the Sgt looks at a watch.
Then the voice overguy comes on, "If you're an Imperial Fist, you wait. Its what you do."

It's worth noting that in the Horus Heresy, no battle brothers Sworn Brothers could ever embark on each other's transports. It's in the 30k Ally Rules under Sworn Brothers.
They have never in the history of 30k ever been allowed to ride in one another's transports.

Aha! That is a solid rule, though we don't know where in the alliance chart the Custodians or Sisters of Silence fall. To the best of my knowledge, "Agents of the Emperor" is a new line in the Age of Darkness Allies chart, unless it was added in book 4-6?
Ah well. No transports for the Custodians or Sisters of Silence then until we see Book VII:Inferno.

Agents of the Emperor is listed in the newer books, I just cant remember what the rule entails. Also normally Agents of the Emperor just take up an HQ Slot, ie: Garro and the Knight Errants.

Agents of the Emperor/Warmaster are considered Sworn Brothers, so still cannot ride in transports. (Latest HH Legion list has this at the front.)

I have the Horus Heresy Legiones Astartes Age of Darkness Army List book (the collectors edition of the Red Book) and the Alliance of Agents of the Emperor is not in it. That's why I asked if it was added in books 4-6, because I do not own those volumes.
