I'm planning on starting a Imperial Fist army and was wondering what kind of units are good to add on to the betrayal at calth and burning of prosperous boxes any advice is appreciated.

In before anyone tells you to get the red books

Though, they are good and just got an updated release, so you may want to start there.

I'm not too up on IF, but I'll give you some general buying advice.

Do you already have the BAC box? I usually recommend this if you want MK4 dudes and Cataphractii. It's a great value. If you want MK3 guys, and don't want the other stuff in the box then wait for ebay sellers to start parting out the Tac squads. I usually find them to be really well priced when you get them this way.

Other than that you'll want to decide if you're just collecting generally or if you want to build a specific force (like a Stonehammer RoW army, etc).

Deimos pattern rhino's if you're doing ten man squads, apothecarys for 10+.
A sicarian is a solid purchase and the ol' murderbrick' are everywhere.

Vehicles, basicly.

I wasn't planning on doing the stone gauntlet but what works better with the fist big squads of tacticals in cover or mechanised veterans

BaC and BoP boxes will get you set for infantry. Then it's either FW for vehicles like Sicaran and Spartan or eBay for OOP Rhinos, Land Riders and Predators. They're effectively the same as those from Forgeworld.

I agree, with those boxes you have enough infantry. After that you will need vehicles, Land Raiders, Rhinos, Sicarans, Predators...

Is a rapier squadron with quad mortars and a master of the signal a good addition

You're very first purchase before anything else needs to be the books Horus Heresy: Legion Astartes Age of Darkness Army List, and Isstvan Campaign Legions. Find them here at Forge World.

Don't even think about playing a game of 30K until you get those books. 30K is not 40K with Forge World models. There are enough significant rules changes to make 30K it's own game, especially when it comes to list building and wargear.

After you get those books and plan out your army list, then you can start buying some models.

Betrayal at Calth will get you enough models for one Legion Tactical Squad of MK IV Marines, or maybe two squads of 15 models, but you really don't want to field Legion Tactical Marines in 10 man squads. You get five Cataphract Terminators, a Contemptor Dreadnought, and a couple possible Preators (HQ choices in 30K). It's a good starting point. After that... it's all up to you.

A few choices that won't go wrong for you are:
Sicarian Tank (one of the best tanks in the game)
Spartan Land Raider
Diemos Pattern Rhino's

Any other choices will come from the Rite of War you choose to take. A Rite of War is kind of like a Detachment, but it applies to your entire army. Oh, and last bit of advice, plan for a 2,500 point army. I refuse to play anything smaller then 2,000 points, because 30K's sweet spot is 2,500 points, but works very well in the 2,000 to 3,000 point range. Units generally cost more, with larger unit sizes, and more costly wargear options. A 2,000 point game of 30K is a lot like a 1,500 point game of 40K.

Good luck, and may you strike the enemies of the Warmaster down and show them who the true leader of the Imperium should be!

Those books are sadly now outdated. You need the new Red books.

How badly out dated could i still make my list from them?

Where ever the Emperor needs his eyes

You'd need the Red Books they changed the points cost on several of the units.

side note: I wouldn't say vehicles are manditory unless you wanted to run a vehicle heavy list. As well as that, from my experience, 30 infantry is NOT enough to cover all that you will end up needing/using. Another calth box or the prospero one for some extra variety I would say is almost a must: remember that your vehicles can't score, so if you loose all 30 of those infantry (not a stretch) you'll have a super hard time winning.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

Both boxes are good but prospero has mkiii which is the traditional look. my Fists are mostly infantry with heavy support squads since you get tank hunter for free as a fist.

I also plan to start Imp fists at some point. As my Thousand Sons are nearly done. As mentioned get the 2 red books.

As for vehicles, id say get a Sicaran battle tank. Not only is it super cool looking but its good any seems to be a staple to 30k.

Really from there its how ever you want. If your group is vehicle heavy, then you might want to invent in them. Our group for example see 30k as not super vehicle heavy, and more infantry heavy.
